Discovering Untouched Luxury: My Stay at Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo
Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, one of the newest gems in their Mexico portfolio, feels as though it appears out of nowhere. After navigating a winding road through the lush jungle, a grand Four Seasons logo engraved on a stone wall marks the entrance. Upon giving my name to security, I began the scenic 15-minute drive through the expansive Tamarindo Reserve to reach the resort. With my driver unfamiliar with the area, a guide met us along the way to ensure we arrived at the lobby—a thoughtful touch given the vastness of the reserve. As we pulled up, I was immediately struck by the breathtaking entrance: an open-air lobby, a stunning infinity pool, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere that Four Seasons is known for. With a refreshing cocktail in hand, I was escorted by a golf cart to my cliffside suite, as walking around the resort can be challenging given the steep hills. Thankfully, requesting a golf cart via the Four Seasons app was always an option, and I found myself relying on it more often than not.
The resort embraces a growing trend toward sustainability and wellness, situated within a 3,000-acre nature reserve that spans six miles of untouched coastline. With only 2% of the reserve developed, the Four Seasons team serves as both the guardians and guides to this natural sanctuary. Guests are invited to explore this utopia, where time moves slowly and each moment brings new opportunities for discovery. For nearly three decades, the reserve has been home to researchers and biologists dedicated to preserving its unique ecosystem. At the Discovery Centre, guests can engage with these experts, explore the reserve, or join guided activities such as birdwatching and snorkeling. It’s a place where each day unfolds into a new adventure, bringing you closer to the surrounding nature and the people who share it.
How To Get There
Getting to Four Seasons Tamarindo can be a bit challenging, but the experience is well worth it. The most convenient airport to fly into is Manzanillo Airport (ZLO), which currently offers direct flights from Mexico City (MEX), Los Angeles (LAX), and additional routes during peak season (November to April). Mexico City is a major international hub, providing great connectivity if you aren’t near any of the other direct-flight airports. Here’s a quick breakdown of current flight options:
- MEX-ZLO: 2-3 daily flights year-round
- LAX-ZLO: 3x weekly in low season, 5x weekly in high season, and daily during festive periods
- PHX, DFW, IAH, and YYC-ZLO: Up to 2x weekly in high season
- ATL-ZLO: Now available in high season
If flights into ZLO don’t align with your travel plans, you can consider flying into Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) and scheduling an air shuttle (private or shared) through Four Seasons. This service includes a 25-minute flight from PVR to Chamela Airstrip and a 55-minute ground transfer to the resort. Currently, there’s a Suite and Air promotion offering a complimentary roundtrip air shuttle for suite bookings through November 15th, 2024, with a 4-night minimum stay. Contact our team for more details.
As a last resort, you can drive from PVR to the resort, though it’s a 5-hour journey with few places to stop along the way. This route is safe, but we generally recommend more efficient options. For all transportation needs, our Hotel Plus service can arrange transfers to and from the resort.
Room Types at Four Seasons Tamarindo
The room types at Tamarindo are categorized as:
- Nature Rooms
- Beachfront Rooms
- Infinity Pool Beachfront Suites
- Infinity Pool Cliffside Suites
- Beach House
- Casas
- Tamarindo Villa
Upon arriving at my Cliffside Ocean-View One-Bedroom Suite, I was warmly welcomed with chocolates, a personalized letter, and a fresh bowl of fruit—a special perk for all of our clients as Four Seasons Preferred Partners. The suite has three distinct areas: a spacious living room, a comfortable bedroom, and a bathroom with ocean views. My suite featured a hammock (the signature accessory at every accommodation here) and a 43-foot infinity pool with panoramic ocean views.
With 1,593 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, the suite comfortably accommodates up to three adults and one child. The large bathroom offers dual vanity sinks, a WC, a double-sized sunken tub, and both indoor and outdoor showers with ocean views. A walk-in closet adds extra convenience. The well-stocked private bar includes a range of wines, beer, soft drinks, water, and snacks. Floor-to-ceiling windows with wooden shutters open to the beautiful surroundings, seamlessly connecting the indoors with the natural beauty outside.
Pro Tip: When booking through us, you receive priority for room upgrades with the highest success rate compared to any other booking tool, including Amex FHR. However, if you want a specific view guaranteed, we always recommend booking the room type you desire to avoid any disappointment.
I had the privileged opportunity to tour some of the other accommodation types and, of course, took plenty of notes!
Nature Room
The entry-level Nature Rooms at Four Seasons Tamarindo offer a cozy, secluded retreat nestled within the lush trees of the reserve. These rooms are dark and intimate, providing minimal views, making them best suited for guests who plan to spend most of their time exploring and only need a place to sleep. They are popular among repeat clients who live locally or are familiar with the area.
Each room features either a king bed with a sofa bed or crib, or two queen beds with a crib. With 710 sq. ft. of indoor-outdoor space, these rooms offer a comfortable and practical option for those who prioritize location and functionality over extensive in-room amenities.
Premium Beachfront Room
The Premium Beachfront Accommodations offer a fantastic option for those who prefer to be closer to the beach and enjoy a flatter terrain compared to the cliffside suites. These rooms feature a similar size and layout, with 1,052 sq. ft. of indoor-outdoor space, but instead of a private infinity pool, the balcony offers a comfortable lounge area that’s perfect for relaxing with a morning coffee. For those who won’t make much use of the pool, these accommodations provide a lovely beachfront experience, just steps from the sand. Ideal for up to 3 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children, or 1 adult and 3 children, these rooms come down to personal preference—whether you want to be perched on the cliff or right by the ocean.
Beachfront Two-Bedroom Suite with Infinity Pool
The Beachfront Two-Bedroom Suite with Infinity Pool offers a spacious and luxurious retreat, perfect for families or friends looking for looking for extra space and privacy. With a large living room and two separate bedrooms, this suite comfortably accommodates up to 6 adults, 4 adults and 4 children, or 2 adults and 6 children. Enjoy sunny days lounging beside your private 36-foot infinity swimming pool, which is perched above the sand with stunning beach and ocean views.
Featuring 3,206 sq. ft. of indoor-outdoor space, two full bathrooms, and one half-bath, the suite is superbly designed for relaxation and entertaining. The ocean-view terrace, hammock, and easy access to the beach via Playero Street make this beachside enclave a true sanctuary. With one king bed, two queen beds, a sofa bed, and a crib, plus a walk-in closet accessible from the bathroom, this suite offers both comfort and convenience, just steps away from the main buildings and the beach.
Pacifico Three-Bedroom Beach House With Infinity Pool
The Pacifico Three-Bedroom Beach House With Infinity Pool is (literally) a one-of-a-kind accommodation at Four Seasons Tamarindo, offering the most coveted location within the beachside enclave. This expansive home provides private, walk-out access to the beach and features 7,126 sq. ft. of indoor-outdoor space, making it ideal for families, groups, or wedding parties. With three king beds, two sofabeds, and options for rollaway beds or cribs, it comfortably sleeps up to 9 adults, 6 adults and 6 children, or 4 adults and 8 children.
Designed for relaxation and entertainment, the beach house boasts six private terraces across its three suites, each offering stunning ocean views and a dedicated infinity pool with beach and ocean views. Enjoy a fully furnished wraparound patio, outdoor showers, and hammocks on two private terraces. Inside, spacious living and dining areas flow into a service pantry with a mini-fridge, coffee maker, and in-room amenities for easy chef prep, plus an indoor dining table for intimate meals. Floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden shutters, and ceiling fans create a breezy, serene atmosphere. A dedicated personal attendant is available 24/7 to cater to your every need, ensuring an unforgettable stay at this luxurious beachfront haven.
Tamarindo Panoramic Five-bedroom Villa With Infinity Pool
The Tamarindo Panoramic Five-Bedroom Villa With Infinity Pool offers an unparalleled experience, making you feel like you’re on top of the world. Perched at 250 feet above the sea, this one-of-a-kind villa crowns the nature reserve in the most private and commanding cliffside location. Spanning 12,127 sq. ft. of indoor-outdoor space, it is designed to entertain. It features a spacious wraparound infinity pool, spectacular living and dining areas, and a complete kitchen for a home-like feel.
Accommodating up to 12 adults, or 10 adults and 4 children, or 6 adults and 10 children, the villa offers panoramic 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean and the Tamarindo Reserve from every corner. Enjoy exquisite meals prepared by your personal chef on one of the villa’s many terraces, all while taking in the breathtaking natural surroundings. With five full bathrooms, one half-bath, and ample space for gatherings, the Tamarindo Villa is the epitome of luxury and privacy, perfect for those seeking an extraordinary escape.
Activities
At Four Seasons Tamarindo, there are numerous experiences designed to enhance your stay:
- Pools: The resort features three infinity pools, including an adults-only pool, all positioned in the main building. With many accommodations having private pools, these shared pools often remain quiet, even during peak times.
- Beach Access and Amenities: There are three swimmable beaches and several coves to explore with snorkeling gear.
- Activities: A complimentary, weekly-updated activity calendar offers both guided and non-guided options. I enjoyed a reserve tour, wine tasting, and a coffee extraction workshop during my stay. The cooking classes also come highly recommended.
- Kids’ Programs: The resort caters to younger guests with the complimentary Kids For All Seasons program for ages 5-12, running daily from 9 AM to 9 PM. For older kids, Escondite is a dedicated space for teens 12 and up, offering the latest technology, creative activities, and a place to connect and explore. Babysitting services are also available. Activities range from birdwatching and photography classes to movie nights. The resort is particularly suited for families with younger children, though adventurous teens may find plenty to enjoy with a full itinerary of water sports and classes.
- El Tamarindo Golf Course: A true hidden treasure, El Tamarindo Golf Course is a must for serious golf aficionados. Opened in 1995, it offers an exclusive experience with carefully managed tee times that make you feel like you have the entire course to yourself. Tee times are available daily from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with gear rentals available. Pro Tip: The best views of the reserve are from hole 9. Even if you’re not golfing, you may just be lucky enough to get a ride up there to see it for yourself.
The Spa
The Spa at Four Seasons Tamarindo offers a unique experience where the spirit of alchemy meets nature. Inspired by the wisdom of the sea, the spa features eight treatment cabins, tranquil relaxation areas, and spacious dressing rooms with indoor and outdoor showers that blend seamlessly into the greenery. Open to all guests, even without a scheduled appointment, this sanctuary invites you to enjoy some R&R in the midst of the Reserve.
Derived from the Nahuatl word for “house of heat,” the spa’s temazcal experience channels pre-Hispanic rituals to deliver mental clarity, emotional healing, and deep relaxation. Rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit with this immersive, transformative journey.
For couples, enjoy massages in private villas or your room, offering a calming and intimate experience.
The spa also offers a beauty salon for nail, hair, and makeup services. Elevate your skincare routine with a facial crafted to leave your skin radiant and glowing under the care of expert estheticians.

- Nacho: Nestled near one of the resort’s stunning pools, Nacho offers a relaxed taqueria experience with dishes rooted in the rich flavors of Mexico’s diverse regions. It is a must-try for lunch or an afternoon snack. Open from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and don’t miss the Taco de Langosta – some of the best tacos I’ve ever tasted!

Each dining venue here offers a unique taste of Mexico’s rich culinary landscape, enhanced by the breathtaking surroundings.
Know Before You Go!
- Recommended Length of Stay: 4-5 nights. This duration allows you to fully immerse yourself in the diverse experiences offered, from beach relaxation to golf and spa indulgence.
- Best Time of Year to Visit: Peak season is November through April, when the weather is less humid and perfect for whale watching. Though visiting in July can still be enjoyable, it’s generally hotter, especially if you’re accustomed to cooler climates.
- Getting Around: Tamarindo is a self-contained resort with every activity located within the Reserve grounds. There is no need to leave unless you are heading to the airport.
- Who Will Enjoy It Most?
- Families who enjoy a beach vacation with a mix of relaxation and activities, including golf and water sports.
- Nature Lovers who enjoy slower-paced, eco-focused experiences.
- Couples who are golf enthusiasts.
- Babymooners seeking some R&R.
- Honeymooners looking for a romantic, nature-immersed retreat.
- Insider Tip: The best view in the entire reserve is from Hole 9 on the golf course. If you ask a staff member, they just might take you to see this spectacular view.
- Wildlife spotting: There are crocodiles in the area, especially during the rainy season.
- Unique Selling Points: The resort’s design beautifully integrates with its natural surroundings, offering stunning views that feel almost cinematic. Its isolation provides a unique sense of tranquility and immersion in nature.
- Comparisons to Nearby Hotels: While Four Seasons Tamarindo is uniquely isolated and surrounded by nature, it is comparable to Four Seasons Punta Mita. Punta Mita offers a more traditional beach resort layout, while Tamarindo provides a blend of cliffside accommodations with a nature-focused environment akin to a mix of Punta Mita and One&Only Mandarina. If you value a nature-immersed setting with cliffside views and a beach resort feel, Tamarindo is a distinctive choice.
