The Design and Atmosphere
Despite being part of the Belmond portfolio, the hotel never feels overly polished or staged. There is luxury here, but it is expressed quietly.
The architecture still reflects its origins as a private home, which gives the entire property a residential ease. Buildings are low-rise, just three stories, with white stucco exteriors softened by tropical greenery. No two rooms are identical, and that individuality comes through in the details. Handcrafted tiles, woven textiles, and local artwork create a strong sense of place without feeling thematic.
There is also a noticeable energy to the property. Maroma was originally built with principles of sacred geometry in mind, and whether or not you come for that, there is a calm, grounded feeling that is hard to ignore.
The Rooms
Every room feels intentional. Ours had a direct ocean view and a generous outdoor space with a hammock that we used more than expected. It is the kind of setup that encourages you to slow down without trying too hard.
What stood out most was how livable the rooms felt. They are not overly large, but they are well-designed, with thoughtful touches that make a difference over a multi-night stay. Good lighting, comfortable seating, and a layout that makes sense.
Butler service is included, and while we typically approach that with some skepticism, here it felt natural. Requests were handled quickly and without formality. It added convenience without becoming intrusive.
Service That Feels Personal
Service is where Maroma quietly excels. It is not performative or overly scripted. It is intuitive.
By the second day, staff were greeting us by name and remembering small preferences, from coffee orders to where we liked to sit on the beach. Cold towels appeared at exactly the right moments, and interactions felt genuine rather than rehearsed.

Dining That Surprises You
We did not expect the food to be a standout, but it was.
At Casa Mayor, the focus is on elevated Mexican cuisine using largely local ingredients. The menus feel rooted in the region but not predictable. Tableside elements add a sense of occasion without becoming gimmicky.
Woodend, led by Curtis Stone, was a highlight. Open-fire cooking, strong seafood options, and a setting right on the beach. It is the kind of restaurant you would go out of your way to visit even if you were not staying at the hotel.
For drinks, Bambuco by Handshake brings in the influence of Handshake Speakeasy, and it shows. The cocktail program is serious, but still fun. It became an easy pre-dinner ritual for us.
Wellness and Activities

What we appreciated most is that wellness here is not limited to the spa. There are experiences like underwater meditation, sound therapy using native bees, and guided stargazing rooted in Mayan culture. It all feels connected to the destination rather than imported.
If you want something more active, the options are there. Paddleboarding, diving, and off-property excursions to cenotes and ruins are easy to arrange. But the truth is, the beach alone is enough for most days.
Who it's best for
Historically, Maroma has been known as a couples’ retreat, and it still excels in that space. It is romantic without trying too hard.
That said, the recent updates have made it more flexible. Families are now clearly part of the mix, with connecting rooms and thoughtful programming for children. It still feels quiet and refined, but no longer exclusively adult-focused.
