The Best Luxury Hotels in the South of France

When travelers ask us about the best luxury hotels in the South of France, our answer is almost never a single hotel. One of the biggest mistakes we see is treating the South of France as one destination when it is actually several distinct regions, each offering a completely different style of luxury. The Côte d’Azur, Monaco, Provence, and Saint-Tropez all have their own personality, pace, and hotel scene. Choosing the right region is often just as important as choosing the right hotel.

After spending time in the South of France ourselves, we came away appreciating just how much the experience changes depending on where you stay. Our personal experiences completely changed how we think about planning trips here. What looks relatively close on a map can feel very different once you’re on the ground, and every stretch of coastline has its own rhythm.

That is exactly why we put together this guide. We want to help you decide which part of the South of France actually matches the type of trip you’re planning. Whether you’re looking for legendary Riviera glamour, a wellness-focused retreat, a honeymoon in one of France’s most iconic hotels, or a slower escape surrounded by vineyards and hilltop villages, there is no shortage of incredible options.

Throughout this blog, we’ll compare the region’s top luxury hotels, explain which travelers each property is best suited for, break down the different personalities of each sub-region, share our thoughts on getting around the South of France, highlight our favorite beach clubs, suggest a sample multi-region itinerary, and answer the questions we hear most often from clients planning their first trip.

If you’re considering a stay at any of these hotels, we’d love to help. Our advisory has spent more than twenty years planning luxury travel around the world and is consistently recognized among the industry’s leading luxury travel agencies. Through our complimentary Hotel Only Service, we can book your stay at the same rate you see online while adding preferred partner benefits, VIP recognition, and personalized planning support for your next trip to the South of France.

Which Region of the South of France Is Right for You?

One of the reasons we love planning trips to the South of France is that every region appeals to a different traveler. Before comparing hotels, it helps to decide what kind of trip you actually want.

Choose the Côte d’Azur if…

  • You want the classic South of France experience with legendary luxury hotels and beautiful Mediterranean scenery.
  • You’re celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, or milestone trip.
  • You want an excellent home base for exploring the Riviera.
  • You want to visit places like Nice, Antibes, Cap-Ferrat, Èze, and Saint-Paul-de-Vence on a single trip.
  • You appreciate timeless luxury over nightlife.

If someone is visiting the South of France for the very first time, this is usually where we begin the conversation.

Choose Monaco if…

  • You want grand hotels and world-class service.
  • Michelin-starred restaurants are high on your priority list.
  • You’re visiting during Formula 1 or another major Monte Carlo event.
  • You prefer a walkable destination where restaurants, shopping, and attractions are all close together.
  • You enjoy city energy more than beach resort living.

Monaco feels completely different from the rest of the Riviera. It is polished, glamorous, and surprisingly compact, making it easy to experience a great deal without spending much time in the car.

Choose Provence if…

  • You picture vineyards, lavender fields, and hilltop villages.
  • Food and wine are central to your trip.
  • You enjoy slower mornings and longer meals.
  • You’re looking for a quieter honeymoon.
  • You’re traveling as a family or multigenerational group and want more space.

Provence is less about seeing and being seen and more about settling into a slower pace. It is one of the easiest places in France to simply relax.

Choose Saint-Tropez and Ramatuelle if…

  • You want to experience the famous beach club culture of Pampelonne Beach.
  • You’re celebrating a major milestone.
  • You enjoy energetic restaurants, stylish beach clubs, and a lively atmosphere.
  • You appreciate boutique luxury as much as large resort experiences.
  • You want one of the most social destinations in Europe.

Saint-Tropez isn’t just another Riviera town. It has a personality all its own. While the Côte d’Azur feels elegant and timeless, Saint-Tropez feels vibrant, fashionable, and considerably more energetic throughout the summer.

South of France Sub-Regions Compared

Although these destinations sit relatively close together, they deliver quite different vacations. We often tell clients that selecting the right region is more important than selecting the right hotel because it shapes everything from your daily pace to your dining experiences and even how much time you’ll spend in the car.

If your dream vacation includes legendary Riviera hotels and exploring multiple towns, the Côte d’Azur is difficult to beat. If you’re looking for casino glamour and Michelin-starred dining, Monaco stands on its own. Travelers dreaming of vineyards and picturesque villages will likely fall in love with Provence, while those wanting lively lunches, beach clubs, and long summer evenings should look toward Saint-Tropez.

How to Get Around the South of France

One piece of advice we give almost every client surprises them. We generally do not recommend self-driving in the South of France during the summer.

On paper, renting a car seems like the obvious choice. The distances between destinations look short, and the coastal roads appear incredibly scenic. While the scenery absolutely lives up to the hype, the traffic often does too.

After spending time in the region ourselves, this is one destination where we’d rather let someone else do the driving.

During our stay in a hilltop village above Cagnes-sur-Mer, we quickly realized that what appears to be a quick drive can easily become a much longer journey once summer traffic builds. Between Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Monaco, and Saint-Tropez, a drive that looks like twenty or thirty minutes can easily stretch well beyond an hour during peak travel periods. Parking can also become surprisingly frustrating, particularly around the coast and in Saint-Tropez.

Instead, we typically recommend arranging a private chauffeur for transfers between hotels and destinations. Not only does it remove the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads, but it also allows you to actually enjoy the scenery instead of concentrating on traffic and finding parking. It’s one of those upgrades that genuinely improves the overall experience.

There is one transfer in particular where we almost always recommend skipping the road altogether. If you’re traveling between Nice Côte d’Azur Airport and Monaco and your budget allows, a helicopter transfer is absolutely the way to go. The flight takes less than ten minutes and offers spectacular views of the Riviera coastline before landing directly in Monaco. Beyond the scenery, it completely avoids one of the busiest stretches of road in the region.

For shorter journeys between coastal cities like Nice, Antibes, and Cannes, France’s rail system is also excellent. Trains are reliable, comfortable, and often faster than driving during busy periods. Once you venture into Provence or the hilltop villages, however, rail becomes much less practical, which is another reason we typically arrange private transportation for clients exploring multiple regions.

For travelers combining Cannes and Saint-Tropez during the summer, a private yacht charter can also make far more sense than sitting in traffic. It transforms what could be a long transfer into one of the highlights of the trip, while also giving you an entirely different perspective of the Riviera from the water.

The South of France is one of the most beautiful places in Europe, but it is also one of the few destinations where we regularly tell clients, “Do as we say, not as we did.” After experiencing the roads firsthand, we can confidently say that letting someone else handle the logistics makes for a much more relaxing vacation. Between private chauffeurs, helicopter transfers, trains, and yacht charters, there are simply better ways to experience the region than spending your holiday behind the wheel, and our Hotel Plus team will help you pick the best mode of transportation.

Côte d'Azur / French Riviera: The Classic Anchor

If you’re planning your first luxury trip to the South of France, the Côte d’Azur is where we recommend starting. Stretching from Nice through Antibes, Cap-Ferrat, and Èze, this stretch of coastline is home to some of the most iconic luxury hotels in France and offers the strongest base for exploring the wider region. Whether you’re spending your days relaxing by the Mediterranean, wandering through medieval villages, or hopping between beach clubs and Michelin-starred restaurants, this part of the Riviera captures the classic South of France experience that so many travelers picture.

One thing we appreciated after spending time here is how varied each destination feels despite being relatively close together. Antibes has a distinctly coastal energy, Cap-Ferrat feels refined and residential, Nice offers a lively city atmosphere, and Èze provides dramatic hilltop views unlike anywhere else along the coast. Rather than trying to stay everywhere, we usually recommend choosing one hotel and exploring the surrounding towns from there.

Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc

Few hotels in the world carry the same reputation as Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. Part of the Oetker Collection, the property has welcomed artists, royalty, celebrities, and high-profile travelers since 1869 and remains one of the most recognizable luxury hotels anywhere in Europe.

Perched on the Cap d’Antibes peninsula, the setting alone is enough to understand why it has become such an icon. The gardens are immaculately maintained, the sea stretches in every direction, and nearly every corner of the property feels like it belongs in a classic Riviera photograph.

Perhaps no feature is more recognizable than the legendary Eden-Roc Pool. Carved directly into the rocks overlooking the Mediterranean, it has become one of the most photographed swimming pools in the world.

Unlike many newer luxury hotels that impress through contemporary design, Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc succeeds because of its history. Staying here feels like becoming part of more than 150 years of Riviera tradition. There is an elegance that never feels forced, and while the property certainly attracts high-profile guests, the atmosphere remains remarkably understated.

One important thing to know is that Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc operates seasonally, typically welcoming guests from mid-April through mid-October. If you’re planning a shoulder season visit, it’s always worth confirming operating dates well in advance. If you’re hoping to visit during peak summer, availability can be extremely limited. Many of the hotel’s longtime loyal guests are given the first opportunity to rebook their preferred dates year after year, which means some of the most desirable periods sell out well in advance. That said, availability does occasionally open up through cancellations, shorter stay opportunities, and waitlist confirmations. While securing a reservation isn’t always easy, it’s certainly not impossible with flexibility and advance planning.

Best For

  • Honeymoons and anniversaries
  • Milestone celebrations
  • Repeat visitors to France
  • Travelers looking for one of the Riviera’s most iconic experiences

Not Best For

  • First-time visitors wanting to be within walking distance of restaurants and shopping
  • Travelers seeking a lively nightlife or beach club scene
  • Guests looking for a modern, contemporary design aesthetic

Our Take

Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc isn’t simply another luxury hotel. It’s one of the destinations that helped define luxury travel on the French Riviera. If you’ve always dreamed of experiencing the classic Riviera, this is one of the strongest places to do it.

Cap d'Antibes Beach Hotel

While Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc often gets the headlines, Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel offers a completely different experience. Rather than grand historic luxury, this boutique property focuses on contemporary design and direct access to one of the peninsula’s most enjoyable stretches of beach.

What surprised us most was how different the atmosphere feels from many of the Riviera’s grand palace hotels. It has a much more intimate, laid-back energy that appeals to travelers who prefer boutique luxury over historic grandeur.

Dining is another major highlight. Les Pêcheurs, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, has become a destination in its own right, showcasing Mediterranean seafood with an emphasis on fresh regional ingredients.

Because of its location, guests can easily enjoy both peaceful mornings by the water and afternoons exploring Antibes before returning to a quieter environment than many of the Riviera’s larger resorts.

Best For

  • Couples
  • Design-conscious travelers
  • Food lovers
  • Travelers wanting direct beach access

Not Best For

  • Travelers seeking the grandeur and history of the Riviera’s legendary palace hotels
  • Families looking for extensive resort amenities and children’s programming
  • Guests wanting expansive grounds and a wide range of on-property activities

Our Take

Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel often flies under the radar compared to its famous neighbor, but that’s part of its appeal. If you value intimate luxury and exceptional dining over historic prestige, it’s a fantastic alternative.

Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel

If Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc represents Riviera history, Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat is one of the flagship hotels in the Four Seasons portfolio.

One thing that stood out to us was how peaceful the property feels. Despite being just a short drive from both Nice and Monaco, it feels completely removed from the Riviera’s busiest areas. The grounds alone encourage guests to slow down, with walking paths winding through pine trees, gardens, and terraces overlooking the sea.

The hotel’s iconic heated saltwater pool remains one of its defining features, stretching toward the Mediterranean and surrounded by private cabanas that have become almost as famous as the hotel itself. Spending an afternoon here is one of those experiences that perfectly captures the Riviera lifestyle.

Dining is another strength, particularly Le Cap, where refined French cuisine is complemented by spectacular sea views. Combined with Four Seasons’ consistently polished service, the overall experience feels effortlessly luxurious without becoming overly formal.

One reason we recommend this property so often is its versatility. Couples love the romantic setting, while families appreciate the spacious grounds, excellent children’s programming, beach club, and variety of accommodations. It is one of the few luxury hotels in the region that works equally well for honeymooners and multigenerational trips.

As a Top 25 Four Seasons Preferred Partner Advisory, we’re also able to extend eligible Preferred Partner benefits that can add meaningful value to your stay, including daily breakfast, potential upgrades, hotel credits, and VIP recognition when available.

Best For

  • First-time visitors
  • Families
  • Honeymooners
  • Four Seasons loyalists
  • Travelers wanting a full-service resort

Not Best For

  • Travelers wanting to be in the center of the Riviera’s social scene
  • Guests looking for a boutique hotel experience
  • Visitors prioritizing walkability to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife

Our Take

If someone asked us for the single safest recommendation on the French Riviera, this would probably be it. It does almost everything exceptionally well and appeals to an incredibly wide range of travelers.

Cap Estel

Cap Estel feels like one of the Riviera’s best-kept secrets.

Occupying its own private peninsula between Nice and Monaco, this intimate hotel has fewer than thirty rooms and offers a level of privacy that’s increasingly difficult to find along the Mediterranean.

Unlike many luxury hotels where you’re constantly aware of other guests, Cap Estel often feels as though you’ve rented a spectacular private estate. Hidden coves, direct sea access, lush gardens, and uninterrupted views create a peaceful atmosphere from the moment you arrive.

Its location also deserves special mention. While guests enjoy complete seclusion, Monaco, Nice, and Èze remain within easy reach, allowing them to experience the best of the Riviera without sacrificing privacy.

Best For

  • Honeymooners
  • Ultra-private escapes
  • Milestone celebrations
  • Travelers seeking maximum seclusion

Not Best For

  • First-time visitors wanting to explore a different town each day
  • Travelers looking for a lively social atmosphere
  • Guests who prefer being within walking distance of restaurants and attractions

Our Take

Privacy is one of the hardest things to find on the French Riviera during summer. Cap Estel delivers it better than almost anywhere else.

Château de la Chèvre d'Or

If you’ve ever seen photographs of the medieval village of Èze, you’ve probably seen Château de la Chèvre d’Or without realizing it.

Built directly into one of the Riviera’s most spectacular hilltop villages, the hotel offers breathtaking views over the Mediterranean while placing guests within walking distance of winding stone streets, charming cafés, artisan shops, and the famous Jardin Exotique.

Unlike many coastal resorts, staying here feels like stepping into another era. Every corner of the village invites exploration, and mornings often begin with quiet walks before day visitors arrive.

Dining is another major reason travelers choose the property. La Chèvre d’Or has earned two Michelin stars and has become one of the Riviera’s premier culinary destinations.

The combination of dramatic scenery, historic architecture, and Michelin dining makes this one of the most romantic hotels in the South of France.

Best For

  • Couples
  • Honeymooners
  • Food lovers
  • Travelers wanting something completely different from a beach resort

Not Best For

  • Travelers wanting direct beach access
  • Families looking for extensive resort amenities and children’s programming
  • Guests with limited mobility, as the village’s steep cobblestone streets and stairways can be challenging

Our Take

If your idea of the South of France involves cobblestone streets and panoramic Mediterranean views rather than beach clubs, Château de la Chèvre d’Or is incredibly difficult to beat.

Hotel du Couvent

One of the newest luxury hotels on the Riviera is also one of its most interesting.

Hotel du Couvent transformed a seventeenth-century convent in Old Nice into an elegant boutique hotel that feels deeply connected to its surroundings rather than simply occupying them.

Instead of replacing the building’s history, the restoration celebrates it. Original architectural details have been carefully preserved while introducing contemporary comforts that feel remarkably understated.

Its location in Old Nice also sets it apart from many luxury Riviera hotels. Rather than feeling removed from the city, guests step directly into lively streets filled with markets, cafés, galleries, and restaurants. For travelers who enjoy exploring on foot, it’s one of the strongest locations in the region.

We also expect Hotel du Couvent to become one of the Riviera’s defining luxury hotels over the coming years. It’s already attracting travelers looking for something different from the traditional grand hotels that have long dominated the coastline.

Best For

  • Design lovers
  • First-time visitors to Nice
  • Repeat Riviera travelers
  • Travelers wanting a walkable city experience

Not Best For

  • Travelers looking for a traditional Riviera beach resort
  • Guests wanting expansive resort amenities or beach club access
  • Visitors planning to spend most of their trip relaxing by the pool

Our Take

Not every luxury trip to the South of France needs to revolve around a grand seaside resort. Hotel du Couvent proves that some of the region’s most exciting luxury experiences are now happening within its historic cities.

Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat vs. Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc

These are two of the most iconic luxury hotels on the French Riviera, and one of the questions we’re asked most often is which one we’d choose. The truth is that both are exceptional, but they appeal to slightly different travelers.

Choose Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat if you:

  • Are visiting the South of France for the first time
  • Want a full-service resort with extensive amenities
  • Are traveling as a family or multigenerational group
  • Prefer the consistency of Four Seasons service
  • Plan to explore Nice, Monaco, and the surrounding Riviera

Choose Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc if you:

  • Want to stay at one of the world’s most legendary hotels
  • Are celebrating a honeymoon or milestone occasion
  • Appreciate timeless Riviera glamour and history
  • Prefer an intimate, iconic atmosphere over a larger resort
  • Don’t mind planning well in advance for peak-season availability

Our Take

If someone asked us for the safest recommendation, we’d generally suggest Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat because it appeals to such a wide range of travelers and consistently delivers an exceptional experience.

For travelers seeking a true bucket-list stay, however, Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is difficult to match. Few hotels anywhere in the world have the same history, reputation, or sense of place. It’s one of those properties that becomes part of the reason for taking the trip.

Monaco / Monte Carlo: Legendary City Luxury

Although Monaco sits just beyond the French border, we almost always include it when planning luxury South of France itineraries. Despite covering less than one square mile, the principality packs an incredible concentration of luxury hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, designer boutiques, and iconic attractions into a remarkably walkable destination.

Unlike the beach resorts found elsewhere along the Riviera, Monte Carlo delivers an urban style of luxury. Days revolve around elegant cafés, harbor walks, casino visits, and fine dining rather than afternoons stretched out beside the sea. For many travelers, spending two or three nights here creates the perfect contrast before continuing on to Cap-Ferrat or Saint-Tropez.

Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

Few hotels are more synonymous with Monaco than Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo.

Occupying one of the most famous addresses in Europe, directly overlooking Casino Square, the hotel has welcomed royalty, celebrities, and world leaders since 1864 while continually evolving to meet modern luxury expectations.

Recent renovations have refreshed guestrooms and suites without losing the Belle Époque elegance that made the property legendary in the first place. The result feels historic yet still current.

Dining is one of the hotel’s defining strengths. Le Louis XV by Alain Ducasse remains one of the most celebrated restaurants in the world, earning three Michelin stars and attracting travelers long before they even book a room.

Everything about Hôtel de Paris feels grand. The lobby, terraces, restaurants, and service all reinforce the sense that you’re staying at one of Europe’s true luxury landmarks.

Best For

  • First-time Monaco visitors
  • Formula 1 weekends
  • Casino enthusiasts
  • Luxury travelers wanting Monaco’s flagship hotel

Not Best For

  • Travelers looking for a quiet resort atmosphere
  • Guests prioritizing beach access over city experiences
  • Visitors seeking a more intimate or boutique hotel

Our Take

If Monaco is on your bucket list, it’s hard to imagine a more iconic place to stay.

Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo

Although Hôtel Hermitage shares the same SBM ownership as Hôtel de Paris, the experience feels quite different.

While Hôtel de Paris sits at the center of Monaco’s energy, Hermitage offers a quieter and more residential atmosphere just a short walk away.

Its Belle Époque architecture is stunning, particularly the famous winter garden designed by Gustave Eiffel. Filled with natural light beneath its soaring glass dome, it’s one of the hotel’s defining spaces and one of Monaco’s most beautiful interiors.

Guests also enjoy direct access to the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo spa, making the property particularly appealing for travelers looking to incorporate wellness into their stay.

Many clients find Hermitage strikes an ideal balance. You remain within walking distance of Casino Square, luxury shopping, and Monaco’s restaurants while returning each evening to a noticeably calmer environment.

One thing we especially appreciate about Hôtel Hermitage is how effortlessly it balances Monaco’s energy with a quieter, more residential feel. It’s one of the reasons we so often recommend it for couples and travelers looking for a more relaxed stay.

Best For

  • Couples
  • Spa-focused travelers
  • Repeat Monaco visitors
  • Travelers wanting a quieter alternative to Hôtel de Paris

Not Best For

  • Travelers wanting to be in the center of Monaco’s social scene
  • Guests looking for extensive resort amenities or beach club experiences
  • Visitors seeking a contemporary design-forward hotel

Our Take

If Hôtel de Paris is Monaco’s grand stage, Hôtel Hermitage feels like its elegant private residence. Both are exceptional, but the atmosphere couldn’t be more different, which is exactly why choosing the right one matters.

Provence: Slow Luxury and Vineyard Country

If the Côte d’Azur is about iconic Riviera glamour and Saint-Tropez is about beach clubs and energy, Provence is about slowing down.

This is the region we recommend to travelers who want to spend their mornings wandering local markets, their afternoons visiting wineries or hilltop villages, and their evenings lingering over long dinners that stretch well past sunset. Provence doesn’t compete with the Riviera. It offers an entirely different experience.

One thing we always tell clients is not to rush Provence. This is a destination where doing less often leads to a better trip. Rather than trying to see five villages in one day, we’d much rather recommend settling into one beautiful hotel and exploring the surrounding countryside at a leisurely pace.

While several of the hotels below technically sit just outside Provence’s traditional boundaries, they capture the same slower, more relaxed philosophy that makes this region so special.

Airelles Gordes, La Bastide

Perched above one of France’s most beautiful villages, Airelles Gordes feels like the postcard version of Provence brought to life.

Originally built as a seventeenth-century stone bastide, the hotel overlooks the Luberon Valley with sweeping views that seem to stretch forever. Every direction offers another vineyard, olive grove, or stone village, making it one of the most picturesque settings anywhere in France.

Despite its historic setting, the hotel doesn’t feel old-fashioned. Airelles has managed to preserve the building’s Provençal character while introducing the polished service, thoughtful amenities, and refined design that define the brand.

Dining here is another highlight. The restaurants embrace Provençal traditions with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients, regional wines, and outdoor dining whenever possible.

One thing we especially appreciate about Airelles Gordes is how naturally it encourages you to slow down. Unlike many Riviera hotels, where the focus is on seeing as much as possible, we found ourselves wanting to linger over long lunches, enjoy the views, and simply settle into the rhythm of Provence.

Best For

  • Couples
  • Honeymooners
  • Slow-travel enthusiasts
  • Design lovers
  • Travelers exploring Provence for the first time

Not Best For

  • Travelers wanting beach access
  • Guests looking for nightlife
  • Visitors hoping to explore the Riviera every day

Our Take

If you’re dreaming about Provence, this might just be the hotel you’re picturing. It’s romantic, beautifully positioned, and captures everything that makes the region so memorable.

Villa Gallici

For travelers who prefer staying in a more vibrant town rather than the countryside, Villa Gallici offers one of Provence’s most charming luxury experiences.

Located just outside the historic center of Aix-en-Provence, this elegant eighteenth-century villa combines boutique luxury with one of southern France’s most walkable cities.

One of the things we love about Villa Gallici is how easy it is to experience Aix on foot. You can spend the morning browsing markets along Cours Mirabeau, stop for lunch at a neighborhood café, visit local galleries, and return to the hotel in time for an afternoon by the pool.

The property itself feels intimate and residential, with individually designed rooms, lush gardens, and a peaceful atmosphere that provides a welcome contrast to the city’s lively streets.

It’s also an excellent base for exploring the wider region. Day trips to wineries, lavender fields, and even Cézanne’s studio are all easily arranged.

Best For

  • Couples
  • Art and history lovers
  • Travelers wanting a walkable town
  • Food-focused vacations

Not Best For

  • Travelers seeking a full resort
  • Families wanting extensive amenities
  • Guests prioritizing spa or wellness programming

Our Take

Villa Gallici delivers exactly what many travelers hope to find in Provence: elegant accommodations, exceptional food, and easy access to one of France’s most charming towns.

Lily of the Valley

Lily of the Valley occupies a unique position within the South of France. Technically located in La Croix-Valmer between Saint-Tropez and Cavalaire-sur-Mer, it sits much closer to the Riviera than Provence. Yet the atmosphere couldn’t feel more different from the beach clubs and nightlife that define nearby Saint-Tropez.

Instead, Lily of the Valley embraces wellness.

Designed by Philippe Starck, the property blends into the surrounding hillside overlooking Gigaro Beach, creating an environment that feels peaceful, understated, and remarkably connected to nature. Rather than emphasizing social scenes or lavish excess, the focus here is on helping guests disconnect, recharge, and genuinely feel better by the time they leave.

We recently stayed at the property and published a complete Lily of the Valley review, where we share our firsthand experience, favorite aspects of the hotel, and a deeper look at the accommodations, wellness programs, dining, and who we think the property is best suited for.

The wellness program is among the strongest in Europe, offering personalized fitness plans, nutrition consultations, spa treatments, and health-focused dining without ever feeling restrictive. Its location also makes it easy to experience both sides of the region. You can spend the day enjoying Pampelonne Beach or exploring Saint-Tropez before returning to a much calmer setting in the evening.

Best For

  • Wellness-focused travelers
  • Couples
  • Honeymooners
  • Design enthusiasts
  • Travelers wanting a quieter base near Saint-Tropez

Not Best For

  • Guests seeking nightlife
  • Travelers wanting to stay directly in Saint-Tropez
  • Visitors looking for a large traditional resort

Our Take

Lily of the Valley proves that luxury doesn’t always need to be loud. It’s one of the most thoughtfully designed wellness hotels in Europe and an excellent choice for travelers who want to balance the energy of Saint-Tropez with a peaceful wellness retreat.

Saint-Tropez and Ramatuelle: Beach Club Culture and Social Luxury

Saint-Tropez revolves around long beach lunches, stylish boutiques, elegant yachts, and some of Europe’s most famous beach clubs. The pace is livelier, the restaurants stay busy well into the evening, and summer days often revolve around Pampelonne Beach. Although that doesn’t mean every hotel here feels like a party.

One thing that often surprises first-time visitors is how different Saint-Tropez’s luxury hotels are from one another. Some focus on intimate boutique experiences within the village itself, while others feel like sprawling hillside resorts. Choosing the right property depends on the type of trip you’re planning.

Cheval Blanc Saint-Tropez

Cheval Blanc Saint-Tropez represents the refined side of Saint-Tropez luxury.

Rather than emphasizing the destination’s social scene, LVMH’s only Maison on the Riviera focuses on impeccable service, elegance, and one of the strongest culinary programs in the region.

Located directly on the Bay of Saint-Tropez and within walking distance of the village, the hotel offers an ideal balance between relaxation and convenience. One thing we especially appreciate is how peaceful the property feels despite its location. After spending time exploring the boutiques, cafés, and harbor, returning to Cheval Blanc feels like stepping into a noticeably calmer side of Saint-Tropez.

Dining is another defining feature. La Vague d’Or, led by Chef Arnaud Donckele, has earned three Michelin stars and consistently ranks among France’s most celebrated restaurants.

Like several Riviera icons, Cheval Blanc operates seasonally and generally closes from late autumn through spring.

Best For

  • Honeymooners
  • Milestone celebrations
  • LVMH loyalists
  • Couples trips

Not Best For

  • Families wanting extensive children’s programming
  • Travelers looking for a lively resort atmosphere
  • Guests wanting a larger property

Our Take

Cheval Blanc demonstrates that Saint-Tropez can feel every bit as refined as Cap-Ferrat. If your priority is great service and quieter luxury, it’s one of our favorite hotels in the region.

Airelles Château de la Messardière, Saint‑Tropez

Sitting high above Saint-Tropez, Château de la Messardière delivers one of the area’s most complete resort experiences.

Originally built as a nineteenth-century château, the property combines panoramic views with multiple pools, several restaurants, an expansive spa, and generous outdoor space that feels worlds away from the crowds below.

Unlike many boutique hotels in Saint-Tropez, this is a property where guests can comfortably spend an entire day without ever leaving.

Families especially appreciate the spacious grounds and wide range of amenities, while couples often enjoy returning to the peaceful hillside setting after busy afternoons along Pampelonne Beach.

Best For

  • Families
  • Multigenerational groups
  • Travelers wanting resort amenities
  • Longer stays

Not Best For

  • Guests wanting to walk everywhere
  • Travelers seeking a boutique atmosphere
  • Couples prioritizing privacy above all else

Our Take

If you’re looking for the closest thing Saint-Tropez has to a traditional luxury resort, Château de la Messardière is one of the strongest options available.

Airelles Saint-Tropez, Pan Deï Palais

Pan Deï Palais offers something entirely different.

With just twelve accommodations, it feels more like an elegant private residence than a hotel. Located in the heart of Saint-Tropez village, guests can easily walk to the harbor, restaurants, luxury boutiques, and cafés without relying on transportation.

The property’s fascinating history also sets it apart. Originally built for a French general and his Indian princess wife, the hotel still reflects subtle Indian influences throughout its design.

While intimate in size, guests also enjoy access to many Airelles amenities nearby, creating an appealing combination of boutique charm and resort privileges.

Best For

  • Couples
  • Boutique hotel lovers
  • Walkability
  • Repeat Saint-Tropez visitors

Not Best For

  • Families
  • Travelers wanting expansive grounds
  • Guests seeking a large resort experience

Our Take

Pan Deï Palais is one of those rare hotels where the location becomes just as memorable as the property itself. If being able to walk everywhere matters to you, it’s a great choice.

The Best Beach Clubs in Saint-Tropez and Ramatuelle

One of the biggest reasons travelers choose Saint-Tropez over other parts of the South of France is the beach club culture.

Unlike many destinations where a beach day simply means reserving a lounger, Pampelonne Beach is built around long lunches, attentive service, beautiful settings, and restaurants where it’s perfectly normal for lunch to last four or five hours. Every beach club has its own personality, and choosing the right one can shape your day just as much as choosing the right hotel.

If you’re visiting during July or August, reservations are absolutely essential. Many of the most sought-after clubs book two to three months in advance, particularly if you’re hoping for a front-row table or sunbeds during peak season. We regularly arrange these reservations for clients before they arrive.

No beach club has defined Saint-Tropez quite like Club 55. Despite its legendary reputation, it has never lost its relaxed atmosphere. The focus remains on excellent Mediterranean cuisine, attentive service, and spending an unhurried afternoon overlooking Pampelonne Beach.

If it’s your first trip to Saint-Tropez, Club 55 deserves a place on your itinerary.

Nikki Beach

At Nikki Beach, you can expect DJs, champagne, celebrations, and one of the liveliest atmospheres anywhere on the Riviera. It’s perfect for travelers looking for a social afternoon that naturally transitions into the evening.

Bagatelle Beach

Bagatelle strikes a balance between refined dining and a festive atmosphere.

Lunch often evolves into dancing as the afternoon progresses, making it one of the Riviera’s signature experiences without feeling quite as high-energy as Nikki Beach.

Casa Amor

Casa Amor offers a different atmosphere than those listed above.

The Moroccan-inspired décor, relaxed pace, and bohemian aesthetic make it one of our favorite options for travelers looking for something a little quieter and less scene-focused.

Other Great Options

Several newer beach clubs have also become favorites among luxury travelers.

  • Loulou Ramatuelle offers elegant beachfront dining and one of the Riviera’s most stylish lunch settings.
  • La Réserve à la Plage combines beautiful design with the polished service associated with La Réserve.
  • Verde Beach delivers a contemporary atmosphere with DJs and an energetic crowd.
  • Byblos Beach extends the legendary Hôtel Byblos experience directly onto Pampelonne Beach.

The Best South of France Hotels for Honeymoons

The South of France has no shortage of spectacular honeymoon hotels, but they all deliver romance in different ways.

Some couples picture iconic Riviera glamour, while others imagine quiet villages, vineyard views, or wellness retreats. The best honeymoon hotel depends on the type of trip you want to have.

We generally recommend:

  • Classic Riviera glamour: Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc or Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel.
  • Maximum privacy: Cap Estel or Cheval Blanc Saint-Tropez.
  • Hilltop romance: Château de la Chèvre d’Or or Airelles Gordes.
  • Beach club energy: Cheval Blanc Saint-Tropez or Airelles Pan Deï Palais.
  • Wellness-focused honeymoon: Lily of the Valley.

There isn’t a wrong choice among these hotels. The key is matching the property to your travel style rather than simply booking whichever hotel has the biggest name.

The Best South of France Hotels for Families and Multigenerational Trips

Many travelers assume the South of France is primarily for couples, but several hotels are wonderful for families, too. If you’re traveling with children or multiple generations, space and amenities become much more important than proximity to nightlife or beach clubs.

Our favorites include:

Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel

Still our top recommendation for families thanks to expansive grounds, excellent children’s programming, multiple pools, and the flexibility that comes with Four Seasons service.

Airelles Château de la Messardière

The closest thing Saint-Tropez has to a true luxury resort. Families appreciate the generous space, numerous dining options, and wide range of activities.

Airelles Gordes

An excellent option for multigenerational groups looking for a slower pace and a beautiful base for exploring Provence together.

For families visiting France for the first time, we generally recommend using the Côte d’Azur as a home base and taking day trips throughout the region rather than changing hotels every few nights.

A Sample South of France Itinerary

One of our favorite things about the South of France is how well several regions combine into one trip. Rather than choosing only one destination, we often recommend spending ten to twelve nights exploring multiple areas. Each stop feels different enough that the trip never becomes repetitive.

Nights 1-3: Monaco

Arrive at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport before transferring directly to Monaco by helicopter. Yes, we’ll recommend the helicopter again. The flight takes less than ten minutes, offers spectacular views of the Riviera coastline, and completely avoids one of the busiest stretches of traffic in the region.

Spend your first few days exploring Casino Square, strolling through Monte Carlo, enjoying Michelin-starred dining, browsing luxury boutiques, and walking the harbor. It’s the perfect introduction to the South of France and offers a very different experience from the coastal resorts you’ll visit later in the trip.

Nights 4-6: Cap-Ferrat or the Côte d’Azur

Continue west to the Côte d’Azur, where the pace begins to slow. Spend your days relaxing by the pool or beach, enjoying leisurely lunches overlooking the Mediterranean, or setting out on a private yacht charter to explore the coastline from the water.

This is also an excellent time to visit nearby destinations like Antibes, Nice, Èze, or Saint-Paul-de-Vence, depending on your interests. While Monaco is about grand hotels and city energy, this portion of the trip is all about soaking in the timeless beauty of the French Riviera.

Nights 7-10: Saint-Tropez and Ramatuelle

Finish your trip in Saint-Tropez, where the atmosphere becomes noticeably more energetic.

Set aside at least one full day to experience Pampelonne Beach and its famous beach clubs, whether your style leans toward a relaxed lunch overlooking the sea or a livelier afternoon with music and celebrations. Spend time wandering the village, shopping the boutiques, exploring the harbor, and lingering over long dinners that stretch well into the evening.

The beauty of Saint-Tropez is that there’s no need to rush. Some of our favorite days here have been the simplest, with a slow breakfast, an afternoon by the water, and dinner overlooking the harbor as the sun sets.

Departure

For your departure, we generally recommend arranging private transportation back to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, though depending on the rest of your itinerary, another regional airport may make more sense. We’ll help coordinate the most seamless routing based on your plans.

When to Visit the South of France

Timing can have a significant impact on your experience.

May through early July

This is our favorite time to visit.

The weather is beautiful, nearly every luxury hotel has reopened for the season, restaurants are lively, and the beaches haven’t yet reached peak summer crowds.

For first-time visitors, this is the sweet spot.

July and August

This is when the South of France is at its busiest.

Beach clubs are buzzing, restaurants are full, and every destination feels energetic.

It’s also the hottest, most expensive, and busiest time of year.

If you’re planning an August trip, we strongly recommend booking hotels, beach clubs, and Michelin-starred restaurants ideally 8-9 months in advance.

September through early October

September is another excellent choice.

The Mediterranean remains warm, crowds begin to thin, and the pace starts to feel more relaxed.

Many of our repeat clients specifically request September because it offers much of the same experience as summer without quite the same intensity.

Mid-October through April

Many of the Riviera’s most famous seasonal hotels close for part of the winter.

Properties like Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc and Cheval Blanc Saint-Tropez generally pause operations, while Monaco and Nice remain more active year-round.

If you’re traveling during the off-season, we’ll always confirm seasonal opening dates before finalizing your itinerary.

What is the best area to stay in the South of France?

There isn’t one “best” area. It depends on the type of trip you’re planning. The Côte d’Azur is ideal for first-time visitors, Monaco offers city glamour and fine dining, Provence is perfect for slower food-and-wine escapes, and Saint-Tropez is known for its beach clubs and lively atmosphere.

How far in advance should I book luxury hotels in the South of France?

For travel during July and August, we recommend booking luxury hotels at least 8 to 9 months in advance. Many of the region’s most sought-after properties and beach clubs fill well before summer, especially the most desirable room categories.

Are beach club reservations necessary in Saint-Tropez?

Yes, especially during peak summer. Popular beach clubs like Club 55, Bagatelle, and Nikki Beach often book months in advance, particularly for waterfront tables and sunbeds.
