Luxury Travel Advisor FAQ: Honest Answers to 30+ Questions

Your Ultimate Guide to Luxury Travel: Answers to All Your Frequently Asked Questions

If you’ve ever wondered whether working with a luxury travel advisor is worth it, you’re not alone. Most travelers understand what a hotel is, what a travel website does, and how to book a flight online. Far fewer understand what a luxury travel advisor actually does, how travel advisors get paid, or why so many luxury travelers never book directly with a hotel.

At Ourisman Travel, we’ve been helping travelers navigate the world of luxury travel since 2006. We were one of the first agencies to pioneer the Hotel Only booking model, giving clients access to VIP hotel benefits without charging a planning fee. Over the years, we’ve discovered that many travelers have the same questions about working with a luxury travel advisor, whether they’re planning a simple weekend getaway or a once-in-a-lifetime journey around the world.

This guide is designed to answer those questions honestly and transparently. You’ll learn what a luxury travel advisor does, how advisors are compensated, when it makes sense to work with one, and how to choose the right advisor for your travel style.

To make things easy to navigate, we’ve organized this FAQ into sections covering general questions, booking and planning, client experience, payment and fees, custom itinerary design, luxury hotel benefits, travel insurance, and how to get started.

General Questions

A luxury travel advisor is a professional who plans and books high-end travel, including hotels, itineraries, transfers, dining reservations, and curated experiences, while providing access to exclusive benefits through preferred partnerships.

Unlike traditional travel agencies that may focus on package vacations or discounted travel, luxury travel advisors specialize in personalized travel experiences and five-star hospitality. Their role extends far beyond making reservations.

A luxury travel advisor serves as an advocate, strategist, and trusted resource throughout the planning process. Advisors build relationships with hotels, cruise lines, destination management companies, and tour operators that often provide clients with amenities and recognition unavailable through online booking platforms.

Many advisors also belong to respected industry networks such as Virtuoso and Brownell Travel, as well as preferred partner programs with brands like Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and Rosewood Elite.

A luxury travel advisor manages every stage of a trip, from destination recommendations and hotel selection to restaurant reservations, private transportation, and support during travel.

Depending on the trip, an advisor may:

  • Recommend destinations based on your interests
  • Match you with the right hotel
  • Advise on room categories and views
  • Arrange airport transfers
  • Coordinate private guides and excursions
  • Secure dining reservations
  • Communicate special requests to hotels
  • Monitor reservations before arrival
  • Assist if disruptions occur during travel

The goal is to save clients time while improving the overall travel experience.

Booking through a luxury travel advisor often provides added benefits, VIP recognition, and expert support at the same published rate available on a hotel’s website.

Many luxury hotels offer advisor bookings benefits such as:

  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Hotel or resort credits
  • Upgrade priority
  • Early check-in and late check-out, when available
  • Welcome amenities
  • Enhanced VIP recognition

Online travel agencies frequently focus on transaction volume rather than personalized service. When a hotel reaches capacity, reservations made through preferred partners often receive greater visibility than bookings made through third-party websites.

Direct bookings may provide loyalty benefits. Advisor bookings often provide those same loyalty benefits plus additional preferred-partner amenities.

Luxury travel advisors specialize in high-end properties, personalized planning, and long-term client relationships, while traditional travel agents often focus on packaged vacations or high-volume bookings.

The difference is not necessarily better or worse. It is simply a different specialization.

Luxury advisors spend significant time evaluating hotels, visiting destinations, building industry relationships, and designing customized travel experiences. Their clients are typically seeking expert guidance rather than simply the lowest price.

For many luxury travelers, yes. Hotel-Only bookings typically include complimentary value-added benefits, while custom itinerary planning saves significant time and delivers expertise that is difficult to replicate independently.

The value becomes particularly apparent for:

  • Milestone celebrations
  • Honeymoons
  • Multi-country trips
  • Luxury cruises
  • Family travel
  • Complex itineraries
  • Destinations requiring local expertise

The easiest way to get started is to submit a Travel Request Form through Ourisman Travel’s website or contact the team directly.

Most inquiries receive a response within one business day, allowing the team to learn more about your travel goals and determine the best service level for your trip.

For peak travel periods, booking approximately one year in advance is ideal.

Luxury hotels typically release inventory about 11 months before arrival.

For high-demand travel periods, including Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Week, spring break, and summer in Europe, planning 12 months or more in advance is increasingly common.

For shoulder season travel or spontaneous getaways, we can often still identify excellent options.

Yes. Ourisman Travel can arrange luxury charter experiences and assist with hosted journeys such as the renowned Four Seasons Private Jet Experience.

Client Experience

A Virtuoso travel advisor can provide access to preferred partner benefits that are unavailable through most online booking channels.

These benefits often include:

  • Daily breakfast
  • Resort credits
  • Upgrade priority
  • VIP recognition
  • Preferred treatment at participating hotels

For travelers who regularly stay at luxury properties, these amenities can create substantial added value.

Our team actively monitors client travel and provides support when issues arise during a trip.

When possible, last-minute bookings are handled the same day. While traveling, clients have access to assistance if unexpected challenges arise.

Yes. Special occasions and preferences are documented and communicated directly to hotel partners through Ourisman Travel’s signature VIP pre-arrival process.

Examples include:

  • Anniversaries
  • Birthdays
  • Dietary restrictions
  • Preferred room locations
  • Favorite beverages
  • Family celebrations

Some enhanced experiences may incur additional charges from the hotel.

Ourisman Travel has specialized in luxury travel since 2006 and was among the first agencies to pioneer the Hotel Only booking model.

The team’s expertise is built on:

  • Firsthand hotel inspections
  • Longstanding supplier relationships
  • Preferred-partner affiliations
  • Extensive destination knowledge
  • Nearly two decades of industry experience

Payment & Fees

Hotel Only bookings are complimentary, while custom itinerary planning services involve a planning fee based on the complexity of the trip.

At Ourisman Travel:

  • Hotel Only service is complimentary
  • Hotel Plus starts at $250 per destination
  • Tailored Luxury starts at $400 per trip + a NET fee

Always confirm current pricing before booking, as fees may change over time.

Luxury travel advisors generally provide the same publicly available hotel rates while adding benefits and services unavailable through most booking channels. Discounted rates look like they save you money, but ultimately, our rates provide the best value.

All major credit cards are accepted. Credit card payments are generally recommended because they provide valuable travel protections and dispute rights.

Hotel and supplier payments are made directly to the supplier, while planning fees are paid separately. This structure helps maintain transparency throughout the booking process.

Hotels compensate us through commission paid directly by the property. Because commissions are already built into publicly available hotel rates, clients generally pay the same rate whether they book directly or through a preferred-partner advisor.

There is no formal minimum spend requirement, but most clients booking luxury hotels typically invest around $1,000 or more per night for accommodations

Tailored Luxury Itinerary Design

Tailored Luxury is Ourisman Travel’s custom itinerary design service. It combines hotel recommendations, logistics planning, transportation, dining suggestions, activities, and destination expertise into one personalized travel plan.

After an in-depth Discovery Call, it takes about two weeks for us to complete a first-draft proposal. After the draft is delivered, we ask that you review it thoroughly as soon as you can to avoid losing any held space and to prevent it from being booked by someone else in the interim. While we strive to meet our delivery timeline, unforeseen circumstances may arise that could cause a slight delay, such as a surge in requests for our travel partners and us.

Yes, within the revision parameters included in the service. The standard planning fee includes up to three rounds of edits. Additional revisions may incur additional fees.

Yes, you will receive a fully curated and designed itinerary including everything you need to know about your destination, hotels and logistics. We help with everything from a packing list, restaurant suggestions, and a tipping guide so that you’re well prepared before departure.

Clients receive a comprehensive travel document covering every major aspect of the trip.

This may include:

  • Hotel recommendations
  • Transportation logistics
  • Restaurant suggestions
  • Activity recommendations
  • Packing guidance
  • Destination information
  • Tipping recommendations

Luxury Hotels and Amenities

Recommendations are based on firsthand experience, trusted relationships, and client-specific preferences.

The team carefully considers:

  • Budget
  • Travel style
  • Occupancy needs
  • Location preferences
  • Desired experiences
  • Hotel strengths and weaknesses

Eligible stays often include daily breakfast, hotel credits, upgrade priority, and flexible arrival and departure benefits. Specific amenities vary by hotel and partner program.

Upgrades are typically subject to availability, but advisor bookings receive the highest priority for upgrades. Ultimately, though, we recommend booking the room type you want up front.

Yes. While you cannot redeem points when booking through a luxury advisory, in most cases, clients continue to earn loyalty points and elite-night credit exactly as they would when booking directly with the hotel.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is optional but strongly recommended.

As trip costs increase, so does potential financial exposure from cancellations, medical emergencies, travel interruptions, and other unexpected events.

Coverage varies by policy, but typically includes protection for trip cancellation, interruption, baggage issues, medical emergencies, and evacuation.

Policy details should always be reviewed carefully before purchase.

Yes, we are always happy to send you an insurance quote and book your insurance coverage. We actually highly recommend it since we know exactly how much to cover and what type of specific coverage destinations require. While we are not a licensed insurance agent, we delegate our insurance quotes and book policies through our host agency’s exclusive Insurance Desk. All questions about coverage, claims, etc. should be directed to the Insurance Desk or Insurance Provider.

How to Choose a Luxury Travel Advisor

Look for experience, industry affiliations, destination expertise, awards received, and firsthand hotel knowledge.

Strong indicators include membership in organizations such as Virtuoso and Brownell, as well as evidence that the advisor has personally visited the properties they recommend.

Consider asking:

  • How long have you been planning luxury travel?
  • Have you personally visited the properties you recommend?
  • Are you affiliated with Virtuoso, Brownell, or another consortium?
  • What destinations or travel styles are your specialty?
  • Do you charge planning fees?
  • What is your typical response time?
  • How do you assist clients during travel emergencies?

Verify industry affiliations, professional accreditation, and established supplier relationships.

Look for:

  • Consortium membership
  • IATA affiliation
  • Host agency affiliation
  • Seller of Travel registration, where applicable
  • Direct hotel partnerships
  • Strong client reviews and testimonials

Absolutely. First-time international travelers often benefit most from working with an advisor because of the added complexity of documentation, logistics, cultural considerations, and destination-specific planning.
