What is One&Only Moonlight Basin?
One&Only Moonlight Basin is a luxury resort in Big Sky, Montana, built for year-round mountain travel.
It’s the brand’s U.S. debut, fully opened late 2025, and arguably the most design-forward luxury hotel addition in Big Sky, Montana.
Designed by Olson Kundig, recently honored in 2026 for its contributions to the global hospitality industry, the firm’s experience with Aman, Six Senses, Auberge, and Four Seasons is unmistakably reflected at One&Only Moonlight Basin. The architecture is bold. The materials are stunning. Floor-to-ceiling glass everywhere. Views framed like art.
Are there a few orientation quirks? Yes. Some rooms have stronger views than others within the same category. But the bones of this property are exceptional. It feels modern, quiet, elevated, and very high-touch.
The resort map, clearly outlining room categories, the spa and fitness center, gondola access, tennis courts, resort pool, and key gathering points, is worth reviewing before arrival so you understand how the property flows and can choose accommodations that align with how you want to experience it.

Where is One&Only Moonlight Basin located in Big Sky?
It’s set in the Moonlight Basin area of Big Sky, surrounded by alpine scenery and designed for easy mountain access.
You’re close to the slopes, but removed from the chaos of Mountain Village. You get ski school access, quieter runs, and fewer crowds, yet it’s only a few runs to reach the center of Big Sky if you want it.
It’s worth spending a few minutes with Big Sky’s ski trail map before your first morning out. The terrain is expansive, and understanding how Madison Base, Lone Peak, and Mountain Village connect will help you plan smarter ski days instead of wasting time traversing.

Is One&Only Moonlight Basin ski-in/ski-out?
Guests access Big Sky Resort via the Sky Lodge and its adjacent gondola, offering seamless, gondola-connected ski access.
Technically, you take a gondola. Practically? It’s seamless.
The gondola:
- Is directly next to the Sky Lodge
- Operates during ski hours; please note that Big Sky Resort lift hours vary by season and conditions.
- Five-minute ride to Madison Base
- Click in and go up the Madison 8 lift
There’s hardly any walking at either end. Because all ski equipment stays at the Sky Lodge lockers, it truly doesn’t feel inconvenient.
Bonus: ski school is right at the other end of the gondola. If you have kids, drop-off logistics are dramatically easier than at competing resorts.
Major plus: an on-site, high-end equipment program featuring brand-new, top-of-the-line gear.
What is the One&Only Sky Lodge?
The Sky Lodge is the mountain operations hub, which includes lockers, rentals, dining, and the gondola access, all in one building.
Inside you’ll find:
- Ski lockers
- Full-service rentals
- Ski boutique
- The Landing restaurant
- Grab-and-go café
Because your gear stays there, you can change quickly for après and never haul boots across the property.
What is The Landing (and why it’s a must for après)?
The Landing has quickly become the mountain’s hottest and busiest lunch spot — and yes, the food actually lives up to the hype.
They hold tables for One&Only guests (which is a must in peak season). It works for:
- Long ski lunches
- Après drinks
- Casual family meals
How does ski concierge/gear support work?
Expect smooth.
Gear is stored and set up. Rentals are handled on-site. You’re not standing in rental shop chaos at the base.
If you have kids in ski school, the Kids Club can even drop them off at ski school in the morning at no extra cost. That detail alone separates this from other Big Sky options.
What types of rooms and accommodations are available?
The resort offers rooms, suites, standalone cabins, and private homes, each with very different use cases.
All guests receive a dedicated host. You’re transported around the property via resort vehicles driven by your dedicated host — efficient and, honestly, part of the fun.
When we asked where the reception was at Sky Lodge, someone immediately called a host to drive us there, and he gave us a full property tour without being prompted.
That level of initiative tells you what kind of service culture they’re building.
Rooms and suites
The main hotel building is divided into:
- East Wing
- Main Wing
- West Wing
All are internally connected.
The West Wing will house the Kids Club and pool (now open), and rooms will open in phases, with some inventory dependent on operational rollout. For now:
- The East Wing has stronger views
- The Main Wing has larger balconies
Room types include:
- Moonlight Kings
- Moonlight QQs
- Moonlight Suites (always corner units)
- Presidential Suite
Important nuance: same room categories can have very different views. This is not a “book blind online” situation. Placement matters. We’ll guide you toward the right wing, view line, and specific configuration based on your priorities, whether that’s sunrise light, ski access proximity, balcony size, privacy, or being near the Kids Club, so you’re not leaving something this important to chance.
Size-wise: Basic rooms are 725–750 sq ft. On paper, this sounds generous. In reality, though, they feel smaller because the bathrooms are so oversized and beautifully done.
We personally would not put a family of four in a QQ room. The hotel does not do rollaways or sofabeds. The chaise works for a small child, but not a third adult.
Best family configurations:
- K + QQ connector rooms
- Moonlight Suite + QQ connector
- 2BR Big Sky Cabins (KK)
If you have kids, room placement and lighting details between connectors matter. This is where working with someone who knows the inventory comes in handy.
Cabins
The One&Only Moonlight Basin cabins are strong contenders if you don’t need a full private home.
Types:
- Alpine Cabins
- Meadow Cabins (more privacy, better positioning)
- 2BR Big Sky Cabins (King + King)
All come with hot tubs.
The 2BR KK layout is a little unusual for friend splits, as the secondary bath is smaller than the primary.
Privacy note: some cabins are more exposed until snowpack rises or summer grasses grow tall. Meadow cabins are the safer bet for seclusion.
If you don’t have kids? Meadow cabin. If you do? Consider a private home.
Private Homes (best for families and groups)
The One&Only Moonlight Basin private homes are magical.
Floor-to-ceiling windows everywhere. Views from living rooms, bedrooms, and even master bathrooms.
4BR and 5BR layouts are nearly identical. The 5th bedroom is essentially a converted den. The 4BR is currently underpriced relative to the 5BR, and there’s only one in the rental pool.
Select homes may include oxygen systems and saunas.
Signature homes are three floors (vs. two) and include extra dens.
If you’re traveling with 4–10 people, this is absolutely the best way to experience the property.
What is the spa and wellness experience like?
The spa emphasizes recovery, altitude support, and exclusivity.
There are 8 treatment rooms. After your treatment, you get:
- Oxygen station access
- Indoor pool
- Outdoor hot tub
- Cold plunge
- Post-treatment lounge (with pistachio Dubai chocolate)
Access to the indoor spa relaxation areas is limited to guests with treatments.
There is also:
- A heated outdoor pool
- An outdoor hot tub
- Private cabanas with their own hot tubs (paid)
What can you do at One&Only Moonlight Basin in winter?
Winter is built around skiing, but there’s more depth than just snow.
On-property:
- Akira Back Japanese Steakhouse (excellent sushi)
- Wildwood (rich, indulgent, very good)
- Dear Josephine bar (top-tier cocktails)
- Moonshack (hidden speakeasy cabin, and requires a poker chip to enter)
Moonshack feels like stepping onto a Yellowstone set. Wood-burning heat, strong whiskey program, small snacks, and genuinely fun bartenders.
Non-ski:
- Fat biking
- Snowshoeing
- Cross-country skiing
- Observatory sessions with a massive telescope
And yes, if you want mountain après off-property:
- Iglu (igloo drinks at the top of the Explorer Gondola)
- Umbrella Bar
- Lone Peak Tram to Kirkcliff Observation Deck
What can you do in summer and the shoulder seasons?
Summer shifts this from a ski resort to a luxury adventure base.
Proximity to Yellowstone changes the equation.
Add:
- Hiking
- Wildlife
- Scenic drives
- Observatory nights
- Spa afternoons
What is the dining scene like at One&Only Moonlight Basin?
It’s one of the strongest food programs in the U.S. luxury ski hotel market.
Akira Back delivers. Wildwood is indulgent. The Landing offers an incredible lunch. Dear Josephine has excellent cocktails. Moonshack is pure experience.
And importantly, they hold prime tables for hotel guests (though availability may be season-dependent).
What experiences are offered at One&Only Moonlight Basin?
Beyond skiing, the experiences at One&Only Moonlight Basin are layered and intentionally diverse. The property features tennis courts for warm-weather stays, a heated resort pool with surrounding loungers for après-ski or summer afternoons, and a well-equipped fitness center adjacent to the spa for guests who want structured movement in addition to mountain activity.
The spa itself anchors the wellness experience, while the Neo boutique offers curated retail, from ski essentials to elevated mountain lifestyle pieces. The Sky Lodge functions as both your ski hub and social center, with The Landing and its panoramic outlook serving as a prime gathering point for long lunches or relaxed après. There’s also the observatory with its oversized telescope for guided stargazing sessions, Lee’s Pools — two private alpine lakes offering additional soaking options — and even a small beach area in the warmer months that softens the alpine setting.
The result is a resort where you can fill your days, or deliberately not, without ever feeling limited to just one type of mountain experience.
Is One&Only Moonlight Basin good for couples, families, or groups?
Yes, but only if you choose the right configuration.
Couples
We suggest staying in a cabin or a strong-view King room + spa day + Moonshack night.
Families
Ski school logistics are unmatched. Kids Club (ages 5–12) runs 9 am–5 pm (8:30 drop-off for ski school) until 7 pm on Fridays; included in the rate. There’s also a game room.
If skiing isn’t daily, the Kids Club gives parents flexibility.
Groups
Private homes. No question.
How do you get to One&Only Moonlight Basin?
Fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), about one hour away.
It is best to book a private SUV in winter. Uber is known to be unreliable. The Skyline shuttle does not service the property. Let us handle these logistics through our Hotel Plus service.
How many nights should you stay?
3–5 nights minimum.
3 nights: ski hard + one spa day
4 nights: ideal balance of adventure/relaxation
5+ nights: explore Yellowstone or slow down
When is the best time to visit?
Winter for peak ski energy. Summer for quieter luxury adventure.
Weather note: January and February can be brutally cold (yes, -40 has happened). March is a safer bet if you’re cold-averse.
What should you pack for One&Only Moonlight Basin?
- Serious winter layers
- Elevated après sweater/jacket
- Base layers + warm accessories
- Hiking shoes (summer)
- One polished dinner look
One&Only Moonlight Basin vs Montage Big Sky: what’s the difference?
Both are high-end Big Sky options, but they offer very different experiences.
One&Only Big Sky (Moonlight Basin):
- Newest luxury resort in Big Sky, Montana
- Design-forward architecture
- Gondola ski access
- Stronger dining program

Montage Big Sky:
- True ski-in/ski-out positioning
