When you think of Europe, destinations like Italy, France, and Spain often come to mind. Yet just a few hours’ drive from Venice lies a lesser-known corner of the continent that quietly captivates all who visit: Slovenia & Istria.
Our founder, David, was recently invited to experience this region as part of the prestigious Griffin Awards, an annual recognition honoring the top-producing advisors at our host agency, Brownell Travel. This week-long journey through Slovenia and Istria revealed an enchanting world of natural beauty, authentic cuisine, and cultural depth, all without the crowds.
If you’re seeking an off-the-beaten-path European destination that still offers comfort, refinement, and a sense of discovery, Slovenia should be at the top of your list.
First Impressions: A Scenic Arrival to Slovenia
We began our journey by flying into Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), followed by a picturesque drive through northern Italy, across Croatia’s colorful coastline, and finally into Slovenia’s serene countryside — no border stops required between Croatia and Slovenia.
Immediately, we were struck by the landscape: rolling hills, vineyards, and charming rural villages framed by the Adriatic Sea to the west and alpine peaks to the north. Traffic was light, the air was fresh, and the pace of life felt wonderfully unhurried.
For travelers weary of overtourism in Europe’s major cities, Slovenia offers a refreshing antidote — authentic, uncrowded, and full of natural beauty.
Where We Stayed
Grand Park Hotel Rovinj (Istria, Croatia)
Our journey began on the Croatian coast at the Grand Park Hotel Rovinj, a modern architectural masterpiece overlooking the old town’s terracotta rooftops and the sparkling Adriatic. The property’s design, wellness offerings, and panoramic sea views made it an ideal introduction to the region’s understated luxury.
Here, we explored Rovinj’s charming old town, wandered along cobblestone streets lined with Italian-influenced architecture, and enjoyed superb seafood dinners with sunset views.

Kempinski Palace Portorož (Slovenia)
Crossing into Slovenia, we continued to the Kempinski Palace Portorož, a storied seaside hotel that has welcomed statesmen and celebrities since 1910. With its elegant Belle Époque style and modern spa, it remains the top choice for travelers seeking classic European glamour on Slovenia’s Riviera.
InterContinental Ljubljana (Slovenia)
We concluded our journey in Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, staying at the InterContinental Ljubljana, the city’s most luxurious hotel. The property offers sweeping views of the Alps from its 18th-floor wellness center and an excellent rooftop restaurant, B-Restaurant, which showcases both local and international flavors.
Highlights & Authentic Experiences in Slovenia & Istria
Truffle Hunting & Wine Tasting in Istria
In Istria’s lush Motovun forest, we joined expert truffle hunters and their dogs for an unforgettable morning in search of black and white truffles. The experience concluded with a gourmet lunch and wine tasting, a true celebration of Istria’s culinary heritage.
Exploring the Roman Amphitheatre of Pula & Brijuni Islands
With our private guide, we explored Pula’s ancient amphitheatre, one of the best-preserved in Europe, before setting sail to the Brijuni Islands National Park — a peaceful archipelago steeped in history and natural beauty.
The Artistic Hilltop Village of Grožnjan
Grožnjan, often called the “town of artists,” was a highlight. With cobbled streets lined with studios and galleries, it embodies Istria’s creative spirit.
Vintgar Gorge & Lake Bled
Crossing into northern Slovenia, we hiked through Vintgar Gorge, a dramatic canyon of rushing turquoise water surrounded by forested cliffs. Nearby, Lake Bled offered one of Europe’s most iconic views — a glacial lake with a tiny island crowned by a church, reached by traditional pletna boat.
At Bled Castle, perched high above the water, we enjoyed a locally inspired lunch overlooking the lake, followed by Slovenia’s signature treat: the original Bled cream cake.
The Caves of Slovenia
A visit to Slovenia isn’t complete without exploring its vast underground world. The Postojna and Škocjan caves, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, revealed breathtaking limestone formations and underground rivers that rival any in Europe.
Flatbread Workshop in Bela Krajina
In the White Carniola region, we participated in a hands-on flatbread cooking class, learning to make Belokranjska pogača, a traditional Slovenian bread. Paired with local wine and enjoyed outdoors, it was a reminder of how food connects travelers to place and tradition.
Cuisine: Authentic, Local, and Memorable
Slovenia & Istria are a culinary crossroads, where Italian, Balkan, and Central European influences converge. Meals here emphasize fresh seafood, local olive oil, truffles, and seasonal produce.
One of our key takeaways? Don’t overthink the menu. Trust your guide or waiter for recommendations, whether it’s grilled octopus, hand-rolled pasta, or wood-fired pizza that rivals anything in Italy.
For travelers who appreciate authenticity over Michelin stars, this region delivers in abundance.
The Type of Traveler Who Will Love Slovenia & Istria
Slovenia & Istria are ideal for:
-
Well-traveled guests seeking mild adventure and authentic culture
-
Couples or small groups who value natural beauty over nightlife
-
Food and wine enthusiasts
-
Travelers looking to escape the crowds of Croatia or Italy
It’s not a destination for high-end shopping or lavish resorts, but rather for those who appreciate 4-star-plus comfort, local charm, and meaningful experiences. Most luxury hotels range around €300 per night, offering exceptional value.
Easiest Way to get to Slovenia & Istria
-

-
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) — ideal if focusing on central and northern Slovenia.

Trieste Airport (TRS) — a small but convenient option close to the Slovenian border.
We recommend arranging private transfers between regions for flexibility and comfort.
