Russell T. Pancoast designed the original Mediterranean Revival clubhouse and beachside cabanas. Today, that historic structure remains at the heart of the property, framed by three Richard Meier-designed buildings that bring a distinctly modern architectural language to the historic site. Joseph Dirand designed the interiors, including the guestrooms, public spaces, cabanas, and Champagne Bar, creating a deliberate contrast between the property’s 1930s heritage and its contemporary Four Seasons identity.
That juxtaposition is really the story of The Surf Club today. You are not staying in a recreated version of historic Miami, nor in a generic glass-and-marble luxury hotel. The original club, cabana row, and ballroom are still the heart of the experience, while the Meier towers rise behind them and the Atlantic remains just steps away.
Arrive in Paradise
The Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club sits in Surfside, a quieter northern enclave of Miami Beach. That location is important to understand before booking. This is not South Beach, and that is exactly why we would choose it for the right traveler.
Surfside is polished, residential, and noticeably calmer than the energy farther south. You are close to Bal Harbor and Bal Harbor Shops, while Miami Beach and South Beach remain easily accessible by car. The hotel itself occupies approximately 900 feet of beachfront across nine acres, giving the property considerably more breathing room than many of Miami’s urban beachfront hotels.
For travelers who want Miami’s restaurants, nightlife and cultural attractions at their fingertips, a South Beach hotel may be the better choice. For those who want to spend their days between the beach, pool, spa, and long lunches before returning to a quieter setting, Surfside is a feature, not a compromise.

It is also worth understanding the relationship between the hotel and The Surf Club residences. The two contemporary residential towers, designed by Richard Meier, sit directly above the historic club, giving the property its distinctive mix of 1930s architecture and modern glass design. The hotel’s residential-style suites borrow from that same indoor-outdoor philosophy without requiring guests to book a private residence.
Guest Rooms
Guest Rooms, the starting room category, offer either stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean or the vibrant cityscape. Bathed in natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows, these rooms boast a refreshing color palette inspired by Surfside’s timeless blend of sand, sea, and sun. Each room can accommodate up to 3 adults or 2 adults and 1 child, with the largest room in this category spanning 735 square feet.
The current guest-room collection ranges from the 435-square-foot Surf Club Room to the 735-square-foot Surfside Corner Room. Other categories include the City-View Room, Deluxe Surfside Room, Ocean-View Corner Room, and Oceanfront Room. The Oceanfront Room can accommodate either one king or two double beds, making it one of the more practical choices for families.
Ocean Bungalows
Nestled in the heart of The Surf Club’s iconic Cabana Row, the Ocean Bungalows offer privileged views of the beach and pool and serve as luxurious retreats on the second floor. Designed by original architect Russell Pancoast, these sun-drenched sanctuaries have always embodied the essence of The Surf Club. Each bungalow accommodates two adults and features a marble bathroom, a patio with direct ocean access, and spans 415 square feet.
The four Ocean Bungalows remain among the property’s most characterful accommodations. At 415 square feet, they are considerably smaller than the residential suites, but their position within historic Cabana Row gives them a completely different feel from the hotel’s tower accommodations. They accommodate two adults and feature a king bed, marble bathroom, and private patio.
Residential Suites
Choose between a Bay View or Ocean View Corner Suite, both spanning over 700 square feet. Located on the 5th-12th floors, you can start your day with a breathtaking panoramic vista of the sparkling Atlantic Ocean through a full wall of windows. In the evening, unwind with a glass of wine on the wraparound corner balcony, with sweeping views of the city skyline. Corner Suites sleep 3 adults or 2 adults and 1 child.
The current residential-suite collection is considerably more extensive than the original post suggests. Options include the 965-square-foot Surf Club One-Bedroom Suite, 1,400-square-foot Bay-View One-Bedroom Suite, 1,800-square-foot Oceanfront One-Bedroom Suite, and 1,800-square-foot City-View and Bay-View Two-Bedroom Suites, plus the 2,000-square-foot Oceanfront Two-Bedroom Suite.
These are the categories we would look at first for families or longer stays. The suites have fully equipped kitchens, and the larger two-bedroom categories also include washers and dryers. The Oceanfront One-Bedroom Suite sleeps up to four adults or two adults and three children, while the Oceanfront Two-Bedroom Suite sleeps up to five adults.
Specialty Suites
Specialty Suites showcase indoor-outdoor living as it was meant to be, with expansive living spaces designed by Joseph Dirand opening onto a large balcony or a private pool and terrace – perfect for family get-togethers and group vacations with friends.
Choose between the Oceanfront Four Bedroom Suite or the Marybelle Penthouse Suite. The Oceanfront Suite sleeps up to 9 adults, or 6 adults and 3 children. It includes a private elevator, a fully equipped kitchen, a washer & dryer, four full bathrooms, and spans over 4,000 square feet across the 3rd and 4th floors.
The Marybelle Penthouse Suite offers four bedrooms, a private rooftop pool and terrace, six full bathrooms, two dining spaces with a full kitchen, and spans over 7,000 square feet. It sleeps 8 adults or 5 adults and 3 children.
The current Oceanfront Four-Bedroom Suite spans 4,328 square feet and sleeps up to nine adults or six adults and three children. It includes four king beds, four full bathrooms, a powder room, a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, and a dedicated elevator.
The Marybelle Penthouse remains the property’s largest hotel accommodation at 7,200 square feet, with four bedrooms, six bathrooms, two dining spaces, a full kitchen, and a private rooftop pool. It sleeps up to eight adults or five adults and three children.
Beach Villa
The current accommodation lineup also includes the standalone Beach Villa, which was not included in the original post. At 5,200 square feet, it offers three king beds and two double beds, a private pool, a fully equipped kitchen, and direct beach access. It sleeps up to eight adults and two children, making it one of the strongest options for a large family or group that wants maximum privacy while retaining access to Four Seasons service.
Accessible Accommodations
Choose from five accessible room categories, ranging from a city-view room to a one-bedroom suite.
The current accessible collection includes a City-View Accessible Room, Accessible Ocean Bungalow, Oceanfront Accessible Room, Accessible Bay-View One-Bedroom Suite, and Accessible Oceanfront One-Bedroom Suite.
How We Would Choose
For a couple who wants the most character, we’d start with an Ocean Bungalow. The square footage is modest compared with the tower rooms, but the Cabana Row location is the experience.
For a couple who wants the best combination of space and views, an Ocean-View Corner Room or Oceanfront Room makes more sense.
For families, we would move straight into the residential suites. The kitchens, living spaces, and larger layouts make them much more practical for several nights than a standard guest room.
For a large family or multigenerational group, the Oceanfront Four-Bedroom Suite or Beach Villa is where The Surf Club becomes particularly compelling.
And for travelers drawn to the architecture as much as the hotel itself, it is worth remembering that Richard Meier conceived the modern residential towers as part of the larger rebirth of The Surf Club. The contrast between those towers, the original Pancoast clubhouse, and Cabana Row is one of the property’s defining visual features.

The Surf Club is deliberately more relaxed than the resort-style properties farther south in Miami Beach. Most days naturally revolve around the beach, pools, spa, dining, and the historic setting, but Four Seasons has built out a thoughtful collection of experiences for guests who want to do more.
During the day, unwind in one of the Daytime Cabanas nestled within the oceanfront gardens of The Surf Club’s historic Cabana Row. These cozy retreats feature tropical rattan furniture, terrazzo floors, and all the comforts of home, including air conditioning and a full bathroom.
The cabanas are one of the property’s signature experiences and a fun way to spend an entire day without leaving the resort. Current Four Seasons programming includes private cabanas along historic Cabana Row, with dedicated service, air conditioning, a full bathroom, and access to the Cabana Pool. The current experience page lists Daytime Cabanas from $550, although pricing varies by date and availability, so we recommend confirming the rate for your stay.
The Pools
The Surf Club currently has three pools, each serving a different purpose. The Surf Club Pool is adults-only and offers the quietest pool experience, while the Family Pool is the largest pool on property and sits alongside an oceanfront lawn with games and space for children. The Cabana Pool is located within historic Cabana Row and is reserved for the cabana experience.
All three pools are heated, and pool access runs from sunrise to sunset. Pool attendants are currently on duty from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm in winter and 7:30 am to 7:30 pm in summer, while cabana hours are 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.
The adults-only pool is an important part of the Surf Club experience. If you are traveling without children, this is where we would spend most of our pool time. For families, however, the separate 65-foot Family Pool gives children their own space without changing the resort’s overall atmosphere.
Family Activities
Despite the sophisticated, adult-leaning atmosphere of the historic Surf Club, Four Seasons has made the property surprisingly family-friendly. Kids For All Seasons provides complimentary supervised programming for children ages 4–12, with crafts, outdoor activities and seasonal programming. Babysitting is also available for children of all ages.
Other family experiences include swimming lessons, tennis lessons, coconut-cracking demonstrations, lawn games, complimentary bicycles and custom electric Mokes that families can use to explore Surfside.
For families, this distinction matters. The Surf Club has an unmistakably polished and grown-up atmosphere, but it is not an adults-only hotel. Kids have plenty of room to enjoy themselves, particularly around the Family Pool and Kids For All Seasons, while the adults-only spaces preserve a quieter experience elsewhere.

Four Seasons describes Lido as a modern interpretation of coastal Italian cuisine, blending traditional Italian cooking with contemporary techniques. The restaurant occupies the original Surf Club ballroom, giving the experience a particularly strong connection to the hotel’s history.

Winston’s on the Beach
