Four Seasons Puerto Rico: What to Know Before You Book
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Puerto Rico is a property that reveals itself in layers. Over the course of our stay, we experienced everything from the beach and pools to dining, wellness, activities, room categories, and the resort’s ongoing evolution as it transitions out of its previous identity. What follows is a complete breakdown to provide a clear sense of what it actually feels like on the ground, not just how the resort looks on paper.
We will walk through every major aspect of the stay, including the areas that exceeded expectations and the ones that are still being refined. This is a large, active, experience-driven resort, and understanding how those pieces come together is key to deciding whether it is the right fit.
This property is best suited for travelers who want variety and energy built into their stay. There is a strong focus on wellness, outdoor activities, nature, and programming, supported by service that is engaged and personal. It works especially well for families, groups, and guests who value having multiple dining options and experiences in one place. On the other hand, it is not ideal for travelers seeking a quiet, reliably swimmable beach or a small, contained hotel experience.
Throughout this guide, we will be transparent about both the highlights and the tradeoffs so you can understand exactly what to expect before booking.
If you are considering a stay and want to elevate the experience, we would love to help you book through Four Seasons Preferred Partner. This allows us to layer in added value such as complimentary breakfast, potential upgrades, resort credits, and priority recognition at check-in, all at no additional cost to you.
If you are ready to book now or simply want guidance on whether this is the right Four Seasons for your next trip, reach out to us directly, and we will take care of everything from there.
Welcome Experience & Arrival at Four Seasons Puerto Rico
Getting to the Property
Four Seasons Puerto Rico is located on the northeast coast of Puerto Rico, approximately 25 to 30 minutes from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (SJU).
Direct flight options are available from most major U.S. hubs. In our case, one of us flew nonstop from DFW in about 4.5 hours, while the other connected in Miami after flying from Austin.
Transportation through the resort is not currently complimentary, with pricing around $355 one-way for two guests or $225 for a solo traveler. We recommend arranging transfers in advance, particularly during high occupancy periods. We are happy to assist with securing your transportation through our Hotel Plus service. Alternatively, Uber is available in the area.
Arrival Experience
Arrival at the property is structured and immediately sets the tone for the stay.
We were met inside the airport by our driver, Emmanuel, who was warm and helpful, and shared local recommendations along the way. The final stretch of the drive passes through a local town before arriving at the gated entrance of the resort, where security verifies guest names prior to entry.
Once on the property, Francisco welcomed us by name, offered water and warm eucalyptus towels, and assisted with luggage, even though it was late at night. Daytime arrivals are greeted with a fresh, fruity Rum cocktail or a non-alcoholic alternative.
The check-in process took place inside the main lobby, where the front desk provided a full resort overview and map before issuing room keys. The resort’s director, Miguel, greeted us and confirmed a dinner reservation for the evening. The general manager, Pablo, also introduced himself during the stay.
Francisco then personally escorted us to our room and delivered our luggage, which reinforced a very intentional and structured arrival flow.
First Impressions of Service
From the moment of arrival, the service felt highly coordinated and very aligned with Four Seasons standards. Guests were consistently acknowledged by name, and the handoff between the airport, security gate, front desk, and room escort felt seamless.
Prior to our arrival, the team thoughtfully sent a complimentary monthly activity calendar for April, which made it easy to begin planning our itinerary in advance. Upon check-in, that itinerary was already printed and ready for us, along with a detailed resort map. It was also seamlessly integrated into the Four Seasons app, allowing us to reference and adjust plans throughout our stay. Here is an example of what the April activity calendar looked like.
We learned that roughly 80% of the team transitioned from the previous St. Regis operation, which likely contributes to the already strong service culture and familiarity among staff interactions.
Welcome Amenities
In-room Four Seasons Preferred Partner welcome amenities included seashell-inspired, beach-themed shortbread desserts that tied into the property’s coastal design narrative.
Getting Around the Property
The resort is large and spread out, so internal transportation is an important part of the guest experience.
Standard guests rely on house transportation and on-demand golf cart transfers between areas of the resort. Residence guests have access to private golf carts.
Complimentary bicycles are also available and commonly used as an alternative for getting around the property.

Communication During the Stay
Communication is integrated across multiple platforms. Each room includes a docked iPad with WhatsApp connectivity. Guests can also communicate through QR code links placed throughout the resort.
Additionally, the Four Seasons app is actively used for chat-based communication, and the team also sends direct text messages when needed. This creates a flexible communication structure depending on guest preference.
Rooms at Four Seasons Puerto Rico
Overview of the Room Categories
The accommodations at Four Seasons Puerto Rico are relatively straightforward in category structure, but varied in layout, orientation, and renovation status. The property features 139 rooms and residences across garden-view and oceanfront categories, with nine of the twelve buildings already renovated and additional phases still underway.
We stayed in an Oceanfront room and an Oceanfront One-Bedroom Suite. Overall, the design language is consistent across categories, with marble finishes, wood detailing, textured bathroom walls, and a contemporary aesthetic that Four Seasons is known for. While the finishes are strong, the interior styling can feel slightly uniform and colder than expected for a rainforest-adjacent setting.
In-room amenities include Diptyque toiletries, Dyson hair dryers, and a standard amenity kit that includes essentials such as a dental kit.
Bathrooms are a standout across all categories, particularly in their scale and layout, with spacious showers, deep bathtubs, and marble detailing. In the suites, the marble bar area paired with its lighting was one of the most visually striking design moments in the room product.
There are currently no plunge pools in any rooms, though select oceanfront rooms are expected to receive them in future renovation phases.
Room category comparison table
| Room Type | Size | View | Layout | Floors | Key Notes |
| Garden View Room | 674 sq. ft. | Garden | King or 2 Queens | Ground floor | Spacious entry-level category, partially renovated |
| Garden View Room with Balcony | 674 sq. ft. | Garden | King or 2 Queens | Floors 2–3 | Same layout as the ground floor with balcony access |
| Deluxe Garden View Room | 748 sq. ft. | Garden | King or 2 Queens | Ground floor | Slightly larger footprint, more space overall |
| Deluxe Garden View Room with Balcony | 748 sq. ft. | Garden | King or 2 Queens | Floors 2–3 | Elevated version of the deluxe category |
| Oceanfront Room | 741 sq. ft. | Ocean | King or 2 Queens | Ground floor | Direct ocean views, no sliding doors |
| Oceanfront Room with Balcony | 741 sq. ft. | Ocean | King or 2 Queens | Floor 2 | Elevated ocean view, balcony access |
| Garden View One-Bedroom Suite | 1,295 sq. ft. | Garden | King + sofa bed | Ground floor | Separate living area, guest powder room |
| Oceanfront One-Bedroom Suite | 1,255 sq. ft. | Ocean | King + sofa bed | Ground floor | Strong layout, but no sliding doors to the outdoors |
| Oceanfront One-Bedroom Suite with Balcony | 1,255 sq. ft. | Ocean | King + sofa bed | Floor 2 | Elevated ocean suite layout |
| Governor Oceanfront Suite | 2,510 sq. ft. | Ocean | King | Second floor | Largest traditional suite category |
Garden View vs Oceanfront Rooms
The key distinction between room types is less about size and more about where they sit within the resort’s footprint and proximity to central areas.
Garden View rooms feel more removed from the core resort experience and open directly onto landscaped areas. Oceanfront rooms, by contrast, are closer to the water-facing side of the property and feel more integrated into the main resort areas.
Key Room Differences and Operational Details
There are only two main building levels throughout the property, which simplifies navigation and creates a consistent layout across categories.
A few important operational notes:
- Oceanfront suites do not include queen beds
- Sofa beds can be made up into a Queen bed during turndown service
- No sliding glass doors exist in renovated rooms, including suites
- No current rooms include private plunge pools, although some oceanfront rooms are planned to receive plunge pools in future phases
One of the most noticeable drawbacks is the lack of true indoor-outdoor flow. Even in oceanfront suites, there is no way to fully open the room to the outdoors, which limits the sense of immersion despite the ocean-facing location.
Residences
The residence product operates at a significantly different scale and design level compared to the standard room categories.
Residences include multi-bedroom configurations with private pools, butler service, and dedicated golf carts for guests. Each residence building includes 10 total residences, with consistent layouts across units.
Key configurations include:
- One standalone 5-bedroom residence
- Three-bedroom and four-bedroom configurations across buildings
- Two residences per floor
Residences include private pools, indoor and outdoor living spaces, and full kitchen setups. However, stylistically, they lean heavily toward the modern, with a white, Miami-inspired design language. While polished, the interiors feel more uniform and less connected to the surrounding natural environment than expected.
Best Room Categories by Traveler Type
Best value category:
Garden View Rooms, which offer a strong space, renovated bathrooms, and full resort access at a lower entry point.
Best upgrade:
Garden View to Oceanfront, primarily driven by view and proximity rather than major layout differences.
Best for families:
One-bedroom suites connecting to oceanfront rooms or residence configurations.
Best for couples:
Governor Oceanfront Suite for scale, privacy, and elevated ocean positioning.
Overall Room Takeaway
The room product at Four Seasons Puerto Rico is strong in size, finishes, and consistency, with a clear emphasis on polished materials and functional layouts. The biggest limitations are not space or design quality, but rather the lack of true indoor-outdoor flow and the relatively uniform aesthetic across categories.
The most meaningful differentiation comes from view orientation and future renovation phases rather than dramatic category-to-category transformation.
Dining at Four Seasons Puerto Rico
Overview of the Dining Landscape
Four Seasons Puerto Rico has a surprisingly wide dining program for a resort of this scale, with a mix of signature restaurants, casual beachside options, and integrated lounge-style spaces. The overall structure is less about standalone destination restaurants and more about a distributed resort dining experience that shifts depending on time of day and energy level.
Breakfast is centered at Seagrapes, which also operates as the main lunch venue. Dinner is served at Paros, El Bembe, and the Beach Club, depending on the atmosphere and preference, while in-room dining is available 24 hours.
There is no traditional grab-and-go coffee outlet on the property, which is notable. There is a grab-and-go smoothie option located at the fitness center, but coffee is not part of a quick-service café setup.
Breakfast in-room dining is included through Four Seasons Preferred Partner perks and is delivered via Seagrapes.
Dining Outlet Overview
Dining outlets:
- Seagrapes: Main breakfast and lunch restaurant

- Beach Club Restaurant: Casual beachfront dining
- Sand Dollar Beachside Grill

- El Cocoteros Grill (golf course small bites)

Seagrapes (Breakfast and Lunch)
Seagrapes functions as the central daytime dining hub and carries most of the breakfast and lunch traffic. Breakfast is served buffet-style from 7 to 11 AM, with a wide selection of eggs, oats, yogurt, fruit, juices, and a cheese-and-meat board. Guests can also order additional egg preparations beyond the buffet offerings.
This is the standard Four Seasons breakfast buffet experience, and while nothing particularly stood out or felt elevated beyond expectations, there was a large and consistent variety that covered all typical preferences.
Lunch transitions into a more casual format, featuring standout items such as pizza, bean dip with plantains, avocado salad, shrimp bowls with rice, and piña coladas. View their menus:
Paros (Dinner)
Paros is the most polished dinner outlet on the property and leans into Greek-inspired cuisine. The experience is more structured and refined than at daytime restaurants.
Our meal included zucchini chips, a dip trio (hummus, htipiti, tzatziki), salmon, broccolini, halloumi, and a passionfruit margarita. The htipiti stood out as the strongest dish in the trio, and overall, the dips were a highlight of the experience.
The atmosphere is calm and dinner-focused, making it the most traditional “evening restaurant” on property. View their dinner menu here.
El Bembe (Lounge Dining)
El Bembe is a hybrid lounge and dining space in the lobby. It is tapas-style with a small menu focused on local flavors and a strong emphasis on cocktails and desserts.
Dinner here included salad, black garlic shrimp, and a salted caramel tart. The caramel dessert was a clear standout and one of the strongest individual dishes across the stay.
Chef Victor also came out and introduced himself during the meal, which added a personal touch to the experience.
While the food was solid and well executed, the overall dinner experience felt more casual than at Paros.
Notably, El Bembe also serves as the welcome drink location for arrivals between 2 and 10 PM. Outside those hours, guests are greeted with water and cold eucalyptus towels. View their menus:
Beach Club Dining
The Beach Club offers the most relaxed and social dining environment on the property. It operates with a more casual menu and is designed as an alternative to the main resort dining spaces.
Lunch included carne asada tacos, fish tacos, guacamole, fries, and rice. This was the most easygoing meal setting and aligns with the overall pool club atmosphere.
The Beach Club also functions as a key fallback option when ocean conditions are rough.
In-Room Dining
In-room dining is available 24 hours and plays a larger role than expected for a resort of this scale. Breakfast in-room dining is delivered through Seagrapes and is included in Preferred Partner benefits.
They offer three menus:
Standout dishes across the stay
Across all dining outlets, the most notable dishes included:
- Pizza at Seagrapes
- Bean dip with plantains at Seagrapes
- Shrimp bowl with rice at Seagrapes
- Black garlic shrimp at El Bembe
- Piña colada (El Bembe and poolside)
- Salted caramel tart at El Bembe and Paros
- Chicken orzo at Paros
- Salmon at Paros
- Htipiti at Paros
- Fish tacos and carne asada tacos at the Beach Club
Beach and Pool Experience at Four Seasons Puerto Rico
How the Beach is Positioned at the Resort
The beach at Four Seasons Puerto Rico is one of the most striking parts of the property, but it is not the resort’s primary swimming area. The guest experience is centered more around the pools, wellness programming, and the beach club than the ocean itself.
There is direct beach access from the property. The shoreline is natural, expansive, and feels uncrowded. It sits within a protected nature reserve that spans about two miles, which limits development and activity. While technically public, access is restricted by natural barriers and a river that divides sections of the coastline, creating a sense of seclusion without true exclusivity.
The hotel does not appear to market the beach as a swimming destination. Instead, it is framed more as a scenic and recreational coastline where guests can walk, relax, or participate in select water sports offered by the beach club, located about a five- to ten-minute walk from the main pool area.
During our stay, the beach was very lightly used. Most guests naturally gravitated toward the pools, which felt more comfortable given the water conditions.
Swimmable Conditions and Red Flag Reality
Swimming conditions directly in front of the main beach are generally unreliable. Based on on-property feedback and what we observed during our stay, double red flags are almost always present. The water was rough with strong waves and wind. While swimming is occasionally permitted, it did not appear to be a practical or commonly used activity.
The hotel acknowledges this dynamic but still offers water-based activities such as surfing lessons and windsurfing, which are framed as structured experiences rather than casual beach swimming.
Because of this, the beach reads more as a scenic backdrop than a daily swim environment, and that distinction is important when setting expectations.
What Guests do When the Ocean is Rough
When conditions are not favorable, guests are guided toward three primary alternatives that define the core water experience of the resort:
- The main resort pool, known as the Seaside Pool
- The beach club pool, known as Sugar Beach Pool, which includes both adults-only and family sections
- The hot tub, located within the main pool area
In addition, an adults-only infinity pool is planned as part of the 2027 renovation scope, which will significantly shift the balance of the pool experience once completed.
This layered pool setup is essentially what replaces the ocean as the central swimming environment.
Overall Pool Landscape and Layout
The resort features two main pool areas and one hot tub, but the design makes the experience feel more varied than that would suggest.
- Main resort pool (Seaside Pool)
- Beach club pool (Sugar Beach Pool) with stacked family and adults-only zones
- One central hot tub
- Adults-only infinity pool planned for 2027
The main Seaside Pool has a depth of approximately five feet, with a family section that gradually slopes in like a natural beach entry. This design makes it more approachable for children and families while still maintaining a resort-style aesthetic.
One of the most noticeable aspects of the pool layout is how private it feels. The design intentionally reduces sightlines between sections, creating a sense of separation even at higher occupancy. The space rarely feels crowded, even when the resort is busy.
Pool service is well-managed. There is a sunscreen application station available, and cabana service is structured and attentive rather than passive.
The pool is open 24 hours a day.
Beach Club vs Main Pool Energy
The beach club is noticeably more social than the main resort pool. It functions as a secondary hub for dining, lounging, and activity, particularly when ocean conditions are rough.
The adults-only pool sits directly above the family pool, which creates a layered environment rather than a fully separated quiet zone. This is one of the more unusual design choices on the property and contributes to a slightly more energetic feel compared to traditional luxury resorts with fully distinct adults-only spaces.
Four Seasons is also in the process of taking over the beach club, which will likely further integrate it into the overall resort experience.
Service, Cabanas, and Day-Use Experience
Service across the pool and beach areas is strong and consistent, with a noticeable level of proactive attention. During our stay, Leo personally introduced himself at the cabanas, which set the tone for the level of engagement.
Cabanas are well set up and typically include:
- Fruit platter
- Bottle of prosecco
- Dedicated shaded seating and lounge space
Cabana pricing ranges from approximately $450 to $550 per day, depending on the season and configuration, with variations based on whether guests select a couples or family layout.
There are service call buttons in cabanas, but not throughout the general pool areas.
Complimentary pool or beach treats were not actively circulating during our stay, though our time spent in the pool areas was limited.
Activities, Nature Programming & Kids for All Seasons
One of the strongest aspects of Four Seasons Resort Puerto Rico at Bahia Beach is the depth of its activity programming. This is not a resort where you sit still unless you want to. The experience is built around movement, nature, and exploration, with a surprising amount included in the resort fee.
A Nature-Driven Setting That Shapes the Experience
The property operates as a protected sanctuary, which directly influences how the resort feels and functions day to day.
Fun fact: approximately 80% of the dogs and cats in the on-site shelter are adopted by hotel guests.
There is a 3/4-mile nature trail that runs through the property, along with a working farm, turtle preservation efforts, and a dog-and-cat rescue program. Wildlife is present throughout the resort, including iguanas, turtles, and birds.
Trees are intentionally preserved to support the bird population, and as a result, the resort has strict rules against disturbing wildlife. One of the more notable details is the level of sustainability built into the property. It is something that does not fully come across online but becomes apparent once on site.
An interesting note that adds to the overall sense of ease: Puerto Rico has no natural land predators, so exploring the jungle or heading out on excursions feels incredibly safe. The only real consideration is the ocean, where standard awareness around marine life, including sharks, applies.
Sports, Wellness & On-Property Activities
There is a wide range of activities available, many of which are included in the resort fee. Activities are presented proactively by the team, and we were given a full, complimentary guest experience calendar ahead of our arrival.
On-property options include:
- Complimentary bikes throughout the resort
- A 3/4-mile nature trail
- Driving range access
- Fitness classes
- Pickleball and padel courts
- Clay and standard tennis courts
- Basketball court
- Nature programming and guided tours
- Turtle preservation activities
Water-based and recreation options include:
- Windsurfing
- A manmade lake with a floating obstacle course
- Catch-and-release fishing
The FS team specifically called out the driving range as one of the best included amenities, and overall, a large portion of the on-property activity programming is included without additional cost.
Golf at Bahía Beach Golf Club
The Bahía Beach Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is widely considered one of the top golf experiences in Puerto Rico. The course spans 6,890 yards and is set within a 483-acre nature reserve, with views of the ocean, rainforest, lakes, and a two-mile stretch of coastline woven throughout.
The design emphasizes environmental preservation and is certified as a Silver Signature Sanctuary by Audubon International. The course is home to more than 240 species of flora and fauna, including tropical birds and leatherback turtles.
Practice and supporting facilities include:
- A driving range with a Trackman simulator
- Oceanfront putting green
- Full-service pro shop
- Clubhouse with locker rooms and changing facilities
Additional services available:
- Rental clubs for all skill levels
- Private instruction with PGA professionals
- Caddy services
- Group tournaments and event coordination
El Cocoteros Grill is located directly on the course between holes 1, 9, and 10 and offers breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks, with delivery directly to your golf cart.
Hours:
- Clubhouse: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM
- Tee times:
- Monday to Friday: 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday: 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Driving range: 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Pro shop: 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM
Hours are subject to change.
Off-Property & Signature Experiences
Beyond the resort, the programming expands significantly. Options include:
- Boat charters departing from a marina about 25 minutes away, with snorkeling and island hopping
- Food tours in San Juan
- Snorkeling excursions to Culebra
- Helicopter transfers to Rincon for surfing
- Bioluminescent bay experiences
- Sound healing sessions
- Live music programming
El Yunque National Rainforest Excursions
A standout off-property excursion is a guided visit to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system.
The experience is fully organized, including transportation and a bilingual guide. Stops may include La Coca Waterfall, Yokahú Tower, El Portal, and various trail systems depending on the itinerary.
Some considerations:
- Children under 4 are not permitted
- The terrain can be uneven, so it may not be suitable for guests with mobility limitations
- Pregnant guests are advised not to participate due to safety concerns
- The departure point is Luquillo, approximately 30 minutes from the resort
- Booking is recommended at least 48 hours in advance, or 7 days in high season
- Guests are advised to bring proper footwear, light clothing, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent.
Bio Bay Experiences
Bioluminescent bay tours are offered in the evening and are one of the more unique experiences available in Puerto Rico.
The resort typically arranges excursions to Laguna Grande in Fajardo. The best time to experience this is December through April, when conditions are drier and visibility is strongest.
For optimal viewing:
- Book within three days of a new moon
- Avoid full moon periods, as brightness reduces visibility
- Tours typically run between 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM
Kids for All Seasons Program (KFAS)
The resort is very family-friendly, with a structured kids program that is well integrated into the overall experience.
The Kids for All Seasons program is designed around both activity and education, with access to nature-based experiences, games, and structured programming throughout the day. It is available to children ages 4 to 12, and they must be potty trained to participate.
Overall Takeaway on Activities
This resort rewards guests who want to stay active and engaged.
Between the nature programming, included activities, and off-property excursions, the variety here is stronger than most Caribbean resorts. It is especially well-suited for guests who want more than just a pool and beach and are interested in exploring both the property and the destination.
Spa & Wellness at Four Seasons Puerto Rico
The spa feels very in line with the rest of the resort. It is polished, thoughtfully done, and clearly centered around service, even for guests not booking treatments.
While we didn’t receive a treatment ourselves, we spent time using the facilities, which are open to all guests and well worth carving out time for during your stay. The spa also includes a strong retail component, featuring designer clothing, jewelry, and sunglasses.
One of the more compelling aspects of the spa is that the core wellness amenities are open to all hotel guests, not just those with booked treatments. This includes:
- Sauna
- Cold plunge
- Locker rooms and relaxation areas
The space is a quiet contrast to the more active energy around the pools and beach club and serves as a reliable fallback if weather limits outdoor plans.
Hours:
- Spa Facilities: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Treatments: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Spa & Salon Services: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Treatment Menu Overview
The treatment menu is broad and aligns with what you would expect from a full-scale Four Seasons spa. There is a clear focus on relaxation and restoration, with some subtle nods to local ingredients and influences.
Facials: Designed for both men and women, with a focus on achieving a clear, refreshed, and glowing complexion.
Massages: A range of signature massages incorporating local Puerto Rican ingredients, aimed at relaxation and recovery.
Couples’ Massages: Structured as a shared experience, ideal for guests looking to build in dedicated downtime together.
Body Treatments: Exfoliating and hydrating treatments designed to smooth and restore the skin.
Hands & Feet: Full nailcare services including trimming, exfoliation, massage, and polish.
Hair Services: Professional styling offerings including cuts, conditioning treatments, and blowouts.
With a full renovation planned for 2027, we are especially excited to see how this space continues to evolve. Even now, it offers a well-rounded wellness component that fits naturally into the resort’s overall experience.
You can view their full list of treatments and pricing here.
Renovation Status & Reopening Notes
Four Seasons Puerto Rico is still in an active transition phase following its conversion from the former St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort, and it is important to understand exactly where the property stands today before booking.
This is not a fully completed product yet. It is a multi-phase renovation that is being rolled out over several years, with full completion expected in 2027.
What Has Already Been Completed
A significant portion of the resort has already been updated, but not everything is finished.
- 9 of the 12 room buildings have been renovated
- The lobby and select public areas have been refreshed
- Paros restaurant has been renovated
- Service has been fully retrained under Four Seasons standards
One important callout is that Garden View rooms are only partially renovated in some buildings. Bathrooms and wet bars have been updated, but furniture in certain rooms has not yet been replaced.
What Is Still Under Renovation
There are several major components of the resort that are still in progress or scheduled for upcoming phases.
- Seagrapes restaurant is set to be fully renovated
- The spa will undergo a full renovation in the low season of 2027
- An adults-only infinity pool will be added on the front lawn in 2027
- Select oceanfront rooms will receive plunge pools
- Seagrapes will temporarily close and be reimagined in the conference area during construction
- During part of the renovation, Seagrapes will operate in a partially enclosed format
Construction is expected to begin in June for the next phase of work.
What to Expect During Your Stay
Construction is visible in certain areas of the property. While it is not overwhelming, it is not fully hidden either. During our stay, we did not experience any noise disruptions, but we could see construction activity near the residences.
There is also the possibility of a temporary operational impact. We were told there may be a two-week window where the main pool could be closed due to construction noise, with guests redirected to the beach club pool during that time.
What Has Improved Since Reopening
The most noticeable improvement since the transition from St. Regis is the service.
Despite the fact that approximately 80 percent of the staff carried over from the previous operation, the retraining under Four Seasons is evident. The service feels polished, proactive, and consistent across departments, even while the physical product is still being refined.
Timeline & Final Completion
All major renovation phases are expected to be completed in 2027.
This includes the spa, Seagrapes, additional room upgrades, and the new adults-only infinity pool. Once complete, the property will feel significantly more cohesive and aligned with the Four Seasons brand standard across all touchpoints.
Bottom Line on Renovations
This is a property in transition. The foundation is strong. The service is already where it needs to be. But the physical product is still catching up. For clients who prioritize polished service, space, and access to activities, the resort is absolutely viable now. For those who want a fully complete, finished Four Seasons experience, it may be worth waiting until closer to 2027.
FAQs
Is this a good resort for families or adults?
It leans family-friendly but still works well for adults. There is a kids club, family-oriented pool design, and structured programming, but also plenty for adults, including wellness, food and beverage experiences, snorkeling, and the beach club. The addition of an adults-only infinity pool in 2027 will further balance this.
What are guests complaining about most right now?
The most consistent feedback points are:
- Birds at Seagrapes
- Ocean conditions that limit swimming
The beach is beautiful, but it is not a reliable swimmable beach, which is important to set expectations around.
How long should you stay?
A minimum of four nights is appropriate to fully experience the property and its activities.
What is the best time of year to visit?
- Peak season: November through May
- Low season: September due to hurricane risk
- Summer: Hot, with temperatures often in the high 90s, but daily rain showers are typically brief
Who is this property best for?
- Active travelers who want a wide range of on-site and off-site experiences
- Families looking for space, programming, and flexibility
- Guests who value strong service and a nature-driven setting
It is less ideal for guests who want a calm, consistently swimmable beach.
What is something you would not fully understand until you visit?
The depth of the nature and conservation element. The protected ecosystem is not just a talking point; it actively shapes how the resort operates and feels.
Can you rent a cabana? If so, how much does it cost?
Yes. Cabanas are available at the pool and are a popular upgrade, especially during busier periods. Pricing typically ranges from $450 to $550 per day, depending on the season and the cabana’s size and configuration (couples versus families). They include added touches like a fruit platter and a bottle of prosecco, along with a service button in each cabana.
Does the hotel have a kids’ splash area or shallow pool for toddlers?
There is no dedicated splash pad, but a shallow, beach-entry-style section of the main pool works well for younger children and helps them ease into the water.
What bathroom amenities and toiletries are provided?
Rooms are stocked with Diptyque bath amenities, including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion. Additional touches include a dental kit, and Dyson hair dryers are provided in-room.
Is this a good babymoon destination?
It can be, depending on priorities. The resort offers strong service, spacious rooms, and a wide range of wellness and relaxation options, including spa facilities such as a sauna and a cold plunge. However, it is a large and active property, and the beach is not ideal for calm swimming. For a babymoon focused on relaxation with some activity options, it works well. For a quieter, more intimate, beach-forward experience, there may be better fits.
Is there construction at Four Seasons Puerto Rico?
Yes, there are ongoing renovations as the property continues its transition. Nine of the twelve room buildings have already been renovated, with additional updates planned, including Seagrapes, the spa, and a new adults-only infinity pool expected by 2027. Some construction may be visible, and there may be short periods of disruption, though service remains strong throughout.
Does the hotel offer transportation?
Yes, transportation can be arranged through the hotel, but it is not complimentary. Pricing is approximately $355 one-way for two guests and $225 one-way for one guest. We recommend arranging transfers in advance for a smoother arrival experience.
Dorado Beach vs Four Seasons Puerto Rico
Dorado Beach is the most natural comparison given proximity and price point, but the experience is meaningfully different.
Dorado feels more contained, more design-forward, and more traditionally beach-centric. The water conditions there are typically calmer, and the overall atmosphere leans quieter and more residential.
Four Seasons Resort Puerto Rico is larger, more activity-driven, and more connected to nature. It offers more to do, more variety, and a stronger sense of place, but at the expense of beach swimmability and walkability.
The decision ultimately comes down to whether you prioritize a calm, swimmable beach or a broader, more dynamic resort experience.
What Sets Four Seasons Puerto Rico Apart
This resort stands out for how rooted it feels in its environment. The rainforest setting, protected wildlife, and sustainability efforts are not subtle. They are central to the experience.
The activity offering is also unusually broad. Between nature programming, water sports, cultural experiences, and golf, there is more to do here than at most Caribbean resorts.
There is also a strong sense of pride among the staff. Conversations about Puerto Rico feel genuine and enthusiastic, which adds a layer of warmth that elevates the overall stay.
Personal Highlights
A few elements stood out consistently throughout our stay:
- Our renovated rooms felt warm and elevated. The marble bar, lighting, and grasscloth-type wallpaper in the bathroom were particularly well done
- The shower size, water pressure, and bathtub depth all exceeded expectations
- Food highlights included the soppressata pizza, rice dishes across multiple outlets, and the blueberry pancakes from in-room dining
- Service was a defining strength. From being greeted by name late at night to thoughtful gestures throughout the stay, it consistently felt attentive and genuine
- The pool design creates a sense of privacy, even when occupancy is high
- The beach club is a strong alternative when the ocean is rough
- Complimentary bikes ended up being a practical and enjoyable way to navigate the property
- The sustainability efforts feel real and are embedded in the experience
- Every room comes with a branded, striped beach tote that you can use for the duration of your stay
Personal Drawbacks to Consider
No property is without tradeoffs, and there are a few things we would flag clearly so expectations are set correctly:
- Birds at Seagrapes: This is the most noticeable day-to-day inconvenience. Because of the nature preserve setting, birds are present during breakfast and lunch service, which can impact the overall dining experience.
- Ocean conditions: The water is consistently rough. We would be surprised if most guests could comfortably swim, even near the beach club. This is not a swimmable beach destination in the traditional sense.
- Pool crowding in high season: Because the ocean is not a reliable alternative, the pools become the primary focus. During peak periods, this could translate to a more crowded pool experience.
- Beach club pool layout: The pool itself is beautiful, but the adults-only section sits very close to the family area. It does not feel fully separated, which may matter for guests specifically seeking a quieter, adults-only environment.
- Limited sunset views: The positioning of the resort means you do not get those classic, direct sunset views, which some Caribbean travelers prioritize.
- Room design limitations in suites: In the one-bedroom suites, the bedroom windows and doors do not open, so there is no way to bring in fresh air. Across renovated rooms, access to the outdoors is through a heavier door rather than sliding glass doors, which feels like a missed opportunity given the setting.
None of these are dealbreakers, but they are important to call out. When expectations are aligned, the overall experience remains very strong.
