The original Hotel Formentor was famously built in 1929, when there were no proper roads into the area, and everything arrived by boat.
Four Seasons fully rebuilt the property under strict preservation guidelines set by the Mallorcan authorities. While the structure had to maintain the original facade, footprint, and height of the historic hotel, the interiors and infrastructure were completely reimagined.
The Beach
Formentor Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca; a long crescent of golden sand framed by dramatic pine trees and calm turquoise water.
The beach holds Blue Flag environmental status and offers gentle, swimmable water that works well for snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Guests have access to dedicated loungers, umbrellas, towel service, and food and beverage delivery directly to the sand.
One thing worth noting: Mallorca’s beaches are public, including Formentor Beach. The resort operates its beach setup on a concession, meaning there are public areas nearby. The beach itself is stunning, but travelers expecting endless stretches of walkable coastline should know Mallorca beaches tend to be smaller and more secluded.

The drive from Palma to the resort takes approximately 60 to 70 minutes through the scenic Tramuntana countryside. Palma is also easily connected to Madrid and Barcelona, with flights taking roughly one hour from Madrid and about 45 minutes from Barcelona.
One of the resort’s signature arrival experiences involves a private transfer to Puerto Pollença followed by a boat transfer directly to the resort’s private dock. If you arrive during daylight hours, we highly recommend coordinating this arrival in advance. It completely transforms the experience and also avoids the final winding stretch of road leading into the resort, which is especially worth considering for travelers prone to motion sickness.
We personally arrived late at night after multiple flight delays and were greeted directly at baggage claim before being escorted to a private sedan for the hour-long drive to the property. The transfer itself was smooth and comfortable, with heated seats and bottled water waiting on board.
One thing to know in advance: the final 15 to 20 minutes of road approaching the resort are steep, narrow, and filled with switchback curves. The scenery is beautiful, but we would not recommend self-driving unless you are very comfortable on mountain roads shared with cyclists.

The design throughout is light and contemporary. Interiors feature natural stone, travertine, pale woods, linen textures, and soft Mediterranean tones, allowing the surrounding landscape to remain the focal point.
Guest Rooms
Entry-level accommodations include Garden View Rooms, Pine View Rooms, and Sea View Rooms.
Garden View Rooms are all located on the ground floor and include plunge pools. One thing we noticed during our stay is that these plunge pools are visible from some higher-floor balconies, so travelers prioritizing privacy may prefer a different category.
Pine View Rooms are considered the entry-level room type and overlook the surrounding pine forest. Even from these rooms, you can still catch glimpses of the sea through the trees, which helps the resort feel visually connected to the water throughout the property.
We stayed in Sea View Room #405, which had a furnished terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. Our favorite part of the room was easily the combination of the comfortable bed and the view.
Specialty Rooms

We also toured Grand Pine View Suite #228, which featured floor-to-ceiling windows and a double-length terrace with access to a plunge pool. The indoor-outdoor flow felt especially strong in this category.

Top-floor suites offer some of the most dramatic Mediterranean views in the resort, thanks to their elevated positioning above the pine canopy.

Dining is one of the resort’s biggest strengths. Mel, Shima, and the other venues each feel distinct from one another rather than repetitive resort concepts, and the culinary program is grounded in local sourcing and Mediterranean ingredients under Executive Chef Francesco Mannelli.
Every meal during our stay was genuinely excellent, which matters even more given the resort’s remote setting. While you can absolutely venture into nearby towns like Pollença, most guests will spend the majority of their dining time on the property.
Mel
Mel is the resort’s all-day Mediterranean restaurant, named after the Catalan word for “honey”.
The space flows seamlessly between indoors and outdoors and serves as the main breakfast venue each morning, including for the Four Seasons Preferred Partner breakfast. In-room dining breakfast is also available.
The menu focuses on Mediterranean farm-to-table cuisine throughout the day, and it felt equally strong for both relaxed dinners and leisurely breakfasts.
Shima
Shima was probably the biggest surprise of the trip for us.
The concept blends Japanese and Peruvian flavors with beautiful sea views and a strong cocktail program. It feels more elevated and atmospheric than some of the other venues, making it the ideal dinner reservation for couples.

Llum i Sal sits directly along the beach and quickly became one of our favorite spots on the property.
Named for “light and salt,” the restaurant focuses heavily on local seafood sourced from fishermen in the Bay of Pollença. The atmosphere feels relaxed and beachy, exactly where you want to spend a long lunch after swimming.

Quiosc is the casual poolside venue tucked beneath the pine trees.
It serves lighter fare, cocktails, and easy lunches throughout the day and works well between beach or pool sessions.
Cercle
Cercle acts as the social heart of the resort in the evenings.

Private cabanas are also available for seasonal reservation. The Royal Suite and Formentor Suite include cabana access, while standalone reservations typically cost around €550, depending on the season, and include a food-and-beverage minimum-spend credit.
One operational detail worth noting: the Wi-Fi around the pool areas was somewhat spotty during our stay, particularly when trying to work from a laptop.
Beach Experience
The beach sits directly below the resort and can be reached via walking paths or golf cart transfers in just a few minutes.
Guests receive dedicated beach loungers, umbrellas, towels, and food and beverage service directly on the sand, with convenient access to Llum i Sal nearby.
The water itself is incredibly calm and clear, making it one of the better swimming beaches in Mallorca.

Guests can access snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, scuba diving, kiteboarding, and jet-skiing directly through the resort. Private sailing charters and boat trips to hidden coves and sea caves can also be arranged.
The signature arrival by private boat from Puerto Pollença remains one of the best introductions to the property and is absolutely worth planning around if timing allows.
