Luxury Destination Pairings in Mexico

Two-Stop Itineraries We Actually Book

Mexico is one of our favorite destinations for a multi-stop luxury vacation. With excellent flight connections, distinct regions, and resorts that offer very different experiences, it is easy to build an itinerary around two destinations rather than spending an entire trip in one place. The key is choosing locations that complement each other without making the travel days unnecessarily complicated.

We particularly like pairing destinations that offer a clear contrast. For example, spend a few days exploring the galleries, restaurants, and desert landscapes of Baja California Sur before slowing down at a remote coastal resort, or start in Mexico City’s food scene and cultural attractions before heading to the beach. Each combination offers a different kind of trip, depending on how you like to travel and what you want from your time away.

Below, we share three Mexico itineraries we recommend considering: Cabo and Todos Santos, Punta Mita paired with Mandarina or Tamarindo, and Mexico City followed by the beach. We’ll explain which hotels we would choose, how to get between destinations, and how many nights to spend in each place to make the most of your trip.

How to Choose Your Pairing

The right pairing depends on what you want from your vacation. Some destinations pair best for contrast, while others work well together because they offer different ways to experience Mexico’s coastline. Here is how we would choose.

Cabo + Todos Santos: Choose this pairing if you want a mix of luxury resort amenities, desert landscapes, art, and a more laid-back coastal town. It is a great option for travelers who want different experiences throughout their trip without another flight.

Punta Mita + Mandarina or Tamarindo: Choose this pairing if you want to spend more time in nature, with exceptional resorts, beautiful beaches, and plenty of opportunities for wellness and outdoor activities. Each destination has a distinct feel, from Punta Mita’s established luxury resort community to Mandarina’s jungle setting and Tamarindo’s expansive, remote coastline.

Mexico City + the beach: Choose this pairing if you want to combine Mexico’s food, history, art, and urban energy with a few days of relaxation by the ocean. It is an especially good option for travelers who want a cultural experience without giving up time at a luxury beach resort.

Pairing One: Cabo + Todos Santos

How This Pairing Works

Best for: Travelers who want to combine a full-service luxury resort with a smaller, more creative coastal town.

Getting there: Fly into Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). From there, plan on approximately 45 minutes to Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas and around an hour to Todos Santos by car. Exact drive times depend on your resort and traffic.

Recommended stay: Spend 3 to 4 nights in Los Cabos, followed by 3 to 4 nights in Todos Santos, for a total of 6 to 8 nights.

Our recommendation: Start with the resort experience in Los Cabos, then head to Todos Santos for a slower pace, independent galleries, local restaurants, and outdoor adventures. This order gives you a natural transition from a full-service beach stay to a more laid-back destination.

Los Cabos: Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

Our first destination pairing starts at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, in Los Cabos. Boasting a harmonious blend of exquisite weather, captivating landscapes, thrilling adventures, and five-star comfort, this destination sets the stage for a dreamy vacation.

We all know Cabo is easy to reach via nonstop flights for West Coasters. But for our East Coast folks, Cabo is also easy to reach with a short connecting flight.

While we love many luxury resorts in Cabo (including Las Ventanas and Four Seasons Cabo Del Sol), our top hotel recommendation for the seasoned luxury traveler is Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas. Located between the desert, mountains, and sea on the East Cape of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas feels remote, yet is just 45 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport. Situated on two miles of pristine shoreline, guests enjoy breathtaking views of the Sea of Cortez and the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains.

The hotel’s contemporary architecture, paired with native landscaping, creates a sanctuary where guests can recharge. The exclusive Three-Bedroom Beachfront Presidential Villa, with a kitchen and three plunge pools, is ideal for a luxurious group or family stay. The expansive Residences, Suites, and guest rooms combine modern, Indigenous-inspired design with panoramic ocean views to highlight Baja’s natural beauty. Of the 141 rooms on the property, our clients’ most popular accommodation is the Oceanfront Room With Plunge Pool.

Pro tip: For this accommodation, ask your trusty travel advisor to request building 2500, as this room is closest to the beach and faces it directly!

If you’re traveling with a larger group, we have also compiled a list of our favorite luxury villas in Cabo. For more activity ideas, read our blog, “3 Ways to Rethink Your Cabo Vacation“. Want to explore other swimmable beaches in Cabo? We have a guide for that, too!

Paradero Todos Santos

About an hour from Los Cabos International Airport, Todos Santos offers a different side of Baja California Sur. This small coastal town is known for its independent art galleries, locally owned shops, and restaurants that draw on the region’s farms and seafood. It is a good counterpoint to a full-service beach resort, particularly for travelers who enjoy exploring beyond their hotel.

For this part of the trip, we recommend Paradero Todos Santos. Set between Todos Santos and Pescadero, the adults-only property suits couples and travelers who appreciate contemporary design, outdoor activities, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Rather than a traditional beachfront resort, Paradero takes a more design-led approach, with architecture that incorporates natural materials and opens onto the desert scenery.

The hotel offers several suite categories, each with a private terrace and indoor-outdoor rain shower. We particularly like the Garden Suites for their outdoor soaking tubs or hammocks (depending on the category) and the Sky Suites for their rooftop terraces with suspended nets designed for stargazing. The latter suit travelers who want to make the most of Baja’s open skies.

For travelers who want to get outside:

Paradero is especially well suited to guests who want more than time by the pool. Stays include guided hikes, surf sessions, mountain biking, cooking classes, farm activities, and art walks in Todos Santos. The property also has a spa, an infinity-edge pool, and a restaurant that focuses on contemporary Mexican cuisine and locally sourced ingredients.

We recommend allowing time to explore the town itself rather than treating Paradero as a resort you never leave. That balance of outdoor activities, local culture, and time to unwind makes it a great complement to Costa Palmas.

We can book your stay with complimentary Virtuoso benefits at Paradero Todos Santos, which include:

  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Daily Full breakfast for up to two guests per bedroom, served in the restaurant
  • $100 USD equivalent Resort or Hotel credit to be utilized during stay (not combinable, not valid on room rate, no cash value if not redeemed in full)
  • Early check-in / Late check-out, subject to availability

Getting between Cabo and Todos Santos

We can arrange private transportation between Los Cabos and Todos Santos through our Hotel Plus service. Paradero is about an hour from Los Cabos International Airport, but transfer time from your specific hotel in Los Cabos to Paradero will depend on your starting point.

We recommend spending 3 to 4 nights at each destination, for a total of 6 to 8 nights. That gives you enough time to enjoy the resort before shifting to the more active, exploratory pace of Todos Santos.

Pairing Two: Punta Mita + Mandarina or Tamarindo

How This Pairing Works

Best for: Travelers who want to combine an established luxury resort destination with a more secluded coastal setting, whether that means a rainforest retreat or a remote resort surrounded by protected wilderness.

Getting there: For Punta Mita and Mandarina, fly into Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is approximately 45 to 60 minutes from the airport by car, while Mandarina is about an hour away. Tamarindo requires a different approach: fly into Manzanillo-Costalegre International Airport (ZLO) and drive to the resort, or take a private flight from Puerto Vallarta to Chamela, followed by a car transfer for the final leg.

Recommended stay: Spend 3 to 4 nights in Punta Mita, followed by 3 to 4 nights in Mandarina or Tamarindo. If you prefer more time at one resort, a shorter 2- to 3-night stay at the second destination can also work, especially if you choose Tamarindo.

Our recommendation: Start in Punta Mita for a broader range of restaurants, resort amenities, and activities, then retreat to a more secluded setting. Choose Mandarina for a coastal rainforest experience focused on design, wellness, and outdoor adventure. Choose Tamarindo if you want a remote resort set within a vast nature reserve, where the landscape and the property itself are the main attractions.

Punta Mita: Three Resorts We Recommend for Different Reasons

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita

For families, multigenerational trips, and travelers who want plenty of amenities without sacrificing privacy, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is our starting point. Set on a private peninsula north of Puerto Vallarta, the resort combines Mexican casita-style accommodations with Pacific Ocean views, multiple pools, beach access, golf, and a wide range of on- and off-property activities.

Accommodations range from guest rooms and suites to private villas and beach houses, making it a flexible choice for families and larger groups. Families with children can take advantage of the Kids For All Seasons program for ages 5 to 12, while teenagers ages 13 to 19 have their own dedicated space at The Container. Adults can spend their time at the spa, on the golf course, or out on the water.

One of the resort’s biggest advantages is its range of experiences. Guests can arrange surfing lessons, snorkeling, seasonal whale watching, and boat excursions to explore the surrounding coastline. We especially recommend chartering a private yacht if you want to spend time snorkeling or exploring less-accessible stretches of coast.

For travelers seeking a well-rounded beach vacation with attentive service, extensive facilities, and plenty to do for every age group, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is hard to beat.

Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort

Naviva is a very different proposition, even though it sits alongside Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita. This adults-only retreat has just 15 luxury tented bungalows spread across 48 acres of coastal forest. Rather than a traditional hotel experience, it focuses on privacy, nature, and a more personalized stay.

The all-inclusive model is a major part of its appeal. Rates include dining and beverages, a 90-minute spa journey, and select experiences, so guests can enjoy the property without constantly planning around reservations or extra charges. The setting is especially well suited to couples, wellness-focused travelers, and anyone who values seclusion over a long list of resort facilities.

There is an important distinction to understand when comparing the two Four Seasons properties. Naviva guests can access the facilities and dining at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, while guests staying at the larger resort do not have reciprocal access to Naviva. This arrangement preserves the privacy and exclusivity that make Naviva distinctive.

We recommend Naviva for a special occasion, an intimate escape, or travelers who want a highly personalized experience and are comfortable paying a premium. It isn’t the right choice for everyone, especially those who prefer a traditional resort atmosphere or want to keep their overall budget in check.

Susurros del Corazón, Auberge Resorts Collection

For travelers who want a smaller-scale alternative with a strong sense of place, Susurros del Corazón offers a different take on Punta de Mita. Set along a beach framed by jungle-covered cliffs, the resort blends contemporary design with Mexican craftsmanship, spacious accommodations, and an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living.

Accommodation options range from guest rooms and suites to larger residences and private casas, making the property suitable for couples, families, and groups. Many accommodations feature generous terraces, while select suites and residences offer private plunge pools or additional outdoor space.

We particularly like Susurros for travelers who want a relaxed beach stay focused on surfing, wellness, and food. The resort’s dining draws on regional ingredients, and its beachfront setting makes it easy to balance time in the water with afternoons spent enjoying the property.

Compared with Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, Susurros feels more boutique. Consider it if you prefer a contemporary, design-led resort with a strong connection to the coast over a larger property with a broader range of facilities. Ask us about current offers when planning your stay, as promotions and availability can change.

Which Punta Mita resort should you choose?

  • Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita: Best for families, multigenerational trips, and travelers who want a full-service resort with extensive amenities.

  • Naviva: Best for adults seeking privacy, an immersive natural setting, and an all-inclusive experience.

  • Susurros del Corazón: Best for couples, families, and design-conscious travelers who prefer a relaxed, contemporary coastal resort.

Mandarina: One&Only Mandarina or Rosewood Mandarina?

Mandarina is a natural next stop after Punta Mita for travelers who want to spend more time surrounded by nature. Along the Riviera Nayarit coastline, the destination combines tropical rainforest, dramatic cliffs, and Pacific beaches, with resorts that make the most of the landscape. It suits travelers who want outdoor activities and seclusion without sacrificing thoughtful design, attentive service, or high-end dining.

There are two luxury resorts here: One&Only Mandarina and Rosewood Mandarina, and the right choice depends on the kind of stay you have in mind.

One&Only Mandarina

One&Only Mandarina sits between rainforest-covered mountains and the Pacific, with accommodations designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. Treehouses and villas offer privacy and a strong indoor-outdoor connection, while the resort’s restaurants, spa, pools, and outdoor experiences keep guests busy without leaving the property.

We recommend One&Only Mandarina for travelers who want a nature-focused resort with a wide range of activities, from horseback riding and hiking to time on the beach. It works well for couples and families who want a stay that feels both active and relaxing.

Rosewood Mandarina

Rosewood Mandarina brings another luxury option to the destination, with the Rosewood approach to residential-style accommodation, design, and personalized service. Its setting offers the same broad appeal as Mandarina: a combination of coastline, lush vegetation, and outdoor activities, balanced with the comfort and service expected of a luxury resort.

We would compare Rosewood Mandarina and One&Only Mandarina based on your preferred accommodation style, the atmosphere you want, and the experiences that matter most to you. Both are worth considering, but we would not treat them as interchangeable. We can help you weigh the differences and decide which is the better fit for your trip.

Tamarindo: A More Remote Coastal Escape

Tamarindo: A More Remote Coastal Escape

If you want to take the trip somewhere quieter and more remote, Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo is worth considering. Set within a vast private nature reserve on Mexico’s Pacific coast, the resort offers a different experience from Punta Mita and Mandarina. The landscape is central to the stay, with forest, rugged coastline, and secluded beaches creating a sense of distance from more developed resort areas.

The resort combines contemporary architecture with its natural surroundings, along with a range of dining options, pools, a spa, and outdoor experiences. It is particularly appealing to travelers who enjoy hiking, wildlife, and time outdoors, but still want the service and amenities of a luxury resort.

One of Tamarindo’s biggest draws is the opportunity to explore the surrounding reserve. We recommend making time for a guided morning hike with a naturalist or biologist to learn more about the local ecosystem. Depending on the season, you may also be able to spot whales from the resort, including from the privacy of your own accommodation.

Getting to Tamarindo

Tamarindo takes more planning to reach than Punta Mita or Mandarina. One option is to fly into Manzanillo-Costalegre International Airport (ZLO) and continue by road to the resort. Alternatively, a private flight from Puerto Vallarta to Chamela may be possible, followed by a ground transfer for the final leg. Flight availability and transfer arrangements should be confirmed for your travel dates.

We recommend 3 to 4 nights in Punta Mita followed by around 3 nights in Tamarindo. This gives you time to enjoy the amenities and activities in Punta Mita before heading somewhere more secluded. Pairing Three: Mexico City + the Beach

For travelers who want to experience more of Mexico beyond the coast, we recommend combining Mexico City with a few nights at a beach resort. The capital offers an excellent mix of restaurants, museums, architecture, galleries, and neighborhoods worth exploring on foot. A few days in the city followed by time beside the ocean creates a well-balanced itinerary without requiring a complicated route.

We recommend spending 2 to 3 nights in Mexico City, followed by 4 to 5 nights at the beach. For the coastal portion, Punta Mita is a good choice if you want a lush Pacific setting with several luxury resorts to choose from, while Los Cabos offers a desert-meets-ocean landscape and a wide range of established resorts.

The best part is that you can generally fly nonstop from Mexico City to either Puerto Vallarta or Los Cabos, making the transition from city to coast relatively simple. The right combination depends on whether you want your beach stay to feel tropical and green or dramatic and desert-like.

Where to Stay in Mexico City

Mexico City has an excellent range of luxury hotels, from intimate properties in leafy residential neighborhoods to larger hotels near the city’s best-known museums, restaurants, and shopping streets. The right choice depends on how you want to spend your time, whether that means exploring the galleries and boutiques of Polanco, discovering the restaurants and historic architecture of Roma and Condesa, or staying close to the city’s major cultural attractions.

Rather than repeat our full hotel recommendations here, we recommend starting with our Luxury Hotels of Mexico City guide, where we cover the properties we would consider for different travel styles and priorities. Once you have chosen your hotel, we can help plan the city portion around restaurant reservations, private guides, and the neighborhoods you most want to explore before continuing to the coast.

Choosing Your Beach Destination

Once you have explored Mexico City, the next step is deciding which coast best suits the kind of trip you want.

Choose Punta Mita if you want a lush Pacific setting with a range of luxury resort experiences. You can opt for the full-service amenities and family-friendly atmosphere of Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, the adults-only, all-inclusive experience at Naviva, or the relaxed beachfront setting of Susurros del Corazón. If you want to extend the trip beyond Punta Mita, Mandarina and Tamarindo offer more secluded alternatives.

Choose Los Cabos if you prefer dramatic desert landscapes, ocean views, and a broad selection of luxury resorts. Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas is a strong option for a quieter stay on the East Cape, while resorts closer to Cabo San Lucas and the Tourist Corridor offer a different mix of dining, golf, and resort amenities. You can explore alternatives in our guides to luxury resorts in Los Cabos and Montage Los Cabos.

We recommend allowing 4 to 5 nights at the beach after your time in Mexico City. That gives you enough time to settle into the resort, enjoy its facilities, and explore the surrounding area without making the beach portion feel rushed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Luxury Destination Pairings in Mexico

How many nights do you need for a two-destination Mexico trip?

We recommend allowing 6 to 8 nights for a resort-to-resort itinerary, with 3 to 4 nights at each destination. If you are combining Mexico City with the beach, plan for 2 to 3 nights in the city and another 4 to 5 nights on the coast.

How do you get from Cabo to Todos Santos?

You can reach Todos Santos by road from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), and you can arrange private transportation for the trip. If you are staying at a resort elsewhere in Los Cabos, allow additional time for the transfer based on your hotel’s location.

Can you combine Mexico City and the beach in one trip?

Yes. Mexico City pairs well with either Punta Mita or Los Cabos. Spend a few nights exploring the capital’s restaurants, museums, galleries, and neighborhoods, then take a nonstop domestic flight to the coast for a resort stay.

What’s the difference between One&Only Mandarina and Rosewood Mandarina?

Both offer luxury stays in the Mandarina area, surrounded by the region’s tropical landscape and Pacific coastline. The best choice depends on your preferred accommodation style, resort atmosphere, and the experiences you want during your stay. We recommend comparing the two properties based on your travel priorities before deciding.

Is Naviva worth it compared with Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita?

The two properties offer different experiences. Naviva is an adults-only, all-inclusive retreat with just 15 tented bungalows, designed for privacy and immersion in nature. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is a larger, full-service resort with a wider range of amenities and family-friendly facilities. Naviva guests can also access Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, while guests of the main resort do not have access to Naviva.

How do you get to Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo?

Tamarindo requires more planning than Punta Mita or Mandarina. Options may include flying into Manzanillo-Costalegre International Airport (ZLO) and continuing by road, or arranging a private flight from Puerto Vallarta to Chamela followed by a ground transfer. Confirm current flight availability and transfer arrangements for your travel dates.
