Stepping into the open-air lobby, I was immediately captivated by the seamless blend of nature and elegance—the space, framed by the Sierra del Vallejo mountains, felt like a sanctuary where the indoors and outdoors melted into one. Cesar, the Butlers’ Manager, and Dani, one of our dedicated butlers, greeted me with such warmth that I instantly felt at home, offering me the Mandarina Heartbeat—a refreshing welcome drink bursting with local citrus flavors that perfectly mirrored the vibrant yet serene spirit of the resort. It was the kind of arrival that sets the tone for a truly unforgettable stay, sparking eagerness for a nature-infused luxury escape.

The lobby’s aesthetic was a masterful storytelling of its surroundings, weaving together modern luxury with the rich cultural heritage of the Huichole and Cora communities. Designed by Caroline Meersseman of Bando x Seidel Meersseman, the space featured natural volcanic stone, rich hardwoods, and woven textiles in terracotta and cream tones, accented by high vaulted ceilings where hand-woven jute roping spiraled around exposed beams, glowing with golden light. Woven rattan furniture and tropical plants brought an organic warmth to the space, enhancing its serene ambiance. Every detail, from the ceramic vases with geometric patterns to hand-carved tables, spoke to the region’s traditions, creating an atmosphere of understated elegance that is both luxurious and authentic.

Rosewood Mandarina’s accommodations are divided into three areas: 

• Flatland: Centrally located, these spacious rooms and suites offer private plunge pools, garden views, and easy access by foot or bike to La Cocina (3-5 min) and resort amenities, though they may lack privacy due to their proximity to pathways and central areas.
• Mountain: Perched in the hills above, these highly private suites offer panoramic ocean and jungle views, private plunge pools, and buggy access, ensuring a secluded retreat.
• Beachfront: Along Canalan Beach, these suites provide direct beach access, plunge pools, and serene oceanfront vibes, with La Cocina a 10-minute boardwalk walk, 5-minute beach stroll, or 3-minute bike ride.

Each room and suite integrates advanced SONIFI technology, spacious soaking tubs, outdoor showers, and decor inspired by Riviera Nayarit’s culture. In-room amenities include a Fellow tea kettle, Nespresso machine, DS & Durga (Jazmín Yucatán) bath products, and Dyson hair dryers, ensuring a refined and indulgent stay. 

It’s also worth noting that plunge pools can be heated, with a maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius.

In terms of overall privacy, the mountain and areas around Rosewood Mandarina’s buildings feel exposed due to sparse vegetation, particularly noticeable with the outdoor showers and the beachfront accommodations’ outdoor spaces, where proximity to neighboring buildings reduces privacy. The resort plans to enhance seclusion by planting abundant local flora, sourced from a large nursery near the polo field for transplantation across the property.

At Rosewood Mandarina, the pool area unfolds as a tranquil oasis, featuring four long infinity-edge pools edged in light gray stone, surrounded by woven loungers and modest shaded cabanas. The lush greenery creates a serene, nature-infused escape that whispers luxury and relaxation.

The four infinity pools are identically divided: the two nearest the mountain by Buena Onda are designated as “priority” adults-only pools, though their closeness to the family pools by La Cocina slightly reduces their exclusivity, while the other two are family-friendly, featuring a 2-foot deep kiddie pool just steps from a shaded canopy area with loungers, games, and extra umbrellas for ample shade. During our visit, when our toddler napped by the pool, four attentive pool attendants quickly added more shade to ensure her comfort, showcasing the staff’s exceptional care and dedication.

Know before you go: The pools embrace a unique “sand to pool” concept, complete with foot hoses to rinse off sandy toes and a sand filter system to keep the water pristine—perfect for those willing to channel their inner beach bum, though it might not be everyone’s cup of tea if sandy feet aren’t your thing!

Food & Poolside Amenities: Each pool is lined with plush loungers and umbrellas for shade, creating a serene spot to soak in the views, while poolside treats like strawberry, cucumber, and mango popsicles, along with frozen pineapple and chocolate-covered bananas dusted with coconut, kept things delightfully refreshing. We ordered lunch from La Cocina, savoring beef, chicken, and fish tacos with a side of fries. However, you can also dine at Buena Onda near the adults-only pool by the mountainside.

Pro tip: While we were relaxing in the pool, Philip, the Director of Food and Beverage, recommended the MDR margarita, a mandarin-infused signature drink that perfectly captured the resort’s vibrant spirit.

Cabanas: While the limited poolside standalone cabanas, available on a first-come, first-served basis and complimentary, are modestly simple, they still offer a charming shaded haven, featuring an open-air retreat with a wooden frame, plush taupe daybed, ceiling fan, and a table with chairs for drinks and dining—perfect for a relaxing escape, even if the absence of drapes feels like a missed opportunity for added shade and privacy that could elevate the experience further.

During our stay, the pools were delightfully peaceful and underutilized, creating a serene ambiance—likely because each room at the property features its own private pool, allowing guests to enjoy a more intimate experience while the main pools offer a tranquil retreat to balance any crowds, despite their identical design and reduced exclusivity of the adults-only pool.

One of the standout features of Rosewood Mandarina is its access to Canalan Beach, one of the rare swimmable beaches in Riviera Nayarit. While many luxury resorts along Mexico’s Pacific coast are perched on dramatic but unswimmable shores due to rough surf or rocky coastlines, Canalan Beach offers calm, swimmable waters ideal for families, couples, and ocean lovers. This makes it a significant advantage over nearby destinations such as Cabo, where beach access may be more scenic than swimmable. Thanks to its cove-like positioning and limited public access, Canalan Beach maintains a private beach atmosphere that guests consistently rave about for its tranquility and exclusivity.

Rosewood Mandarina features up to five distinct dining venues that celebrate Mexico’s vibrant culinary heritage, delivering farm-to-table experiences with seasonal menus, locally sourced ingredients, and indigenous cooking techniques for unforgettable meals.

La Cocina reimagines traditional Mexican dishes with a modern twist, while Toppu, a mountainside Japanese restaurant with coastal flair, delivers some of the best views. Buena Onda offers a laid-back beachside setting for lunch, dinner, and sunset snacks. Barra Penasco is a speakeasy-style mixology haven perched above a secluded beach amid ancient trees. And just a 5-10 minute walk down the beach to Canalan Beach Club, Allora—though not directly affiliated with Rosewood or One&Only—offers traditional Italian cuisine with a coastal twist, featuring handcrafted pizzas, pastas, and antipasti made with local ingredients.

Begin each morning at La Cocina, Rosewood Mandarina’s vibrant open-air restaurant, where the indoor-outdoor home-like flow and contemporary Mexican pop music create a lively ambiance. Breakfast, complimentary for Rosewood Elite guests booking through Ourisman Travel, features freshly baked banana bread with a daily rotating marmalade, and your choice of à la carte breakfast from the menu. The restaurant showcases authentic flavors with tortillas and corn products handcrafted daily on a comal by the local Nayarit community using traditional methods, highlighted by dishes like bean tacos with sweet and spicy salsa.

At Asaya Spa, nestled in Riviera Nayarit’s lush landscapes, Tanya, the Spa Assistant Manager, welcomed me with a refreshing berries and lemongrass drink and introduced me to the sacred Ceiba tree—a Maya World Tree symbolizing the cosmic connection between heavens, earth, and underworld. I then explored the wellness area, which features a cold plunge, saunas, and their signature Hoja Santa-infused lemongrass coconut water, designed to aid digestion. 

As I walked to my treatment room, I discovered the spa’s square layout centered around two ancient Parota trees, revered by the Huichol people for their healing powers, their sprawling branches and rough, grayish bark adorned with large, flat seed pods that dangle like nature’s ornaments, signaling they’re listening to your energy and offering supernatural restoration. 

The design of Asaya Spa guides guests through wellness journeys of connection and exploration, featuring 10 massage rooms (including two couples’ rooms), woven textiles in earthy tones, a gym with two movement rooms offering complimentary and paid classes, a spa wellness menu, and a nearby garden growing herbs and produce. 

The Social House offers a tranquil haven for small groups to share experiences, such as guided meditation or herbal tea ceremonies. It’s an ideal spot for families or friends to connect and rejuvenate, reflecting Mandarina’s “A Sense of Place” ethos with a focus on holistic well-being and meaningful moments.

We’re honestly absolutely smitten with Rosewood Mandarina, a new resort that outshines One&Only Mandarina with its warm, family-friendly vibe, bolstered by experienced One&Only staff ensuring a seamless soft opening. The low-occupancy hospitality was genuine, never overbearing, making every moment special. 

Our butlers, accessible via WhatsApp, were quick to anticipate our needs and even arranged a sneak peek of an under-construction mountaintop suite with jaw-dropping views, though the WhatsApp system occasionally felt repetitive and slow despite their efforts. 

There’s subtle construction on the Explorers Club’s outdoor space near the Flatlands, La Cocina, and the pool was barely noticeable, with ocean sounds muffling any noise in the beach and pool areas, and many guests, especially Rosewood Elite, are likely enjoying upgrades to serene beachfront accommodations. 

Compared to Four Seasons Tamarindo, Rosewood Mandarina boasts a superior beach and caters more to families with its newly opened Explorers Club (expanding through 2026), while Tamarindo leans romantic. 

The 134 accommodations, particularly the Premier Beachfront Suites, are perfect for families, offering private plunge pools, separate living and dining areas, walk-in closets, and an extra half bath for ultimate comfort. 

While the modular architecture feels a bit repetitive to some, thoughtful touches like SONIFI tech and spotting crocodiles under the beachfront boardwalk add unique charm. 

The Asaya Spa is still developing, and the identical pool designs, with the kids’ pool adjacent to the adults’, receive mixed reviews, but the spectacular service at Rosewood Mandarina, especially for a new hotel with low occupancy, makes now an ideal time to book and experience this top-tier luxury firsthand!

Pro tip: While we also adore One&Only Mandarina, recent guest feedback highlights service inconsistencies like slow buggy transfers and food service delays, communication issues, and climate-related concerns such as water damage and erosion within the accommodations.
